Horsemen, Fire decide to let their hair down Sat, 26 Apr 2008 07:19 EDT "Hair Today and Gone Tomorrow" was the obvious headline on a news release concerning the Lexington Horsemen's visit to the Louisville Fire in arenafootball2 Saturday night.Team owners Lennie House of the Horsemen and Will Wolford of the Fire made a bet. The winning owner will shave the loser's head when the game ends at Freedom Hall."It's time to put it all on the line for this rivalry, and, Will, I mean every hair on your head," House told Wolford."Mr. House better be ready because I'm coming with the clippers, and my wife sure doesn't want me to lose any more hair," Wolford responded. The Fire, in their eighth year, have professed that other opponents in their af2 division already are their rivals. But the first-year Horsemen, ranked eighth in this week's coaches' poll, are ready to challenge the established team on Interstate 64.
76ers smash Pistons, take 2-1 lead Sat, 26 Apr 2008 07:24 EDT The 76ers added one more surprise victory in a season stuffed with them. The win wasn't the shocker - it was the way Philadelphia completely thrashed the playoff-tested Detroit Pistons in Game 3 that was the stunner.Andre Miller was spot on with his mid-range jumper and scored 21 points, and the rest of the Sixers ran all over the court in a dominating 95-75 victory Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round series.Samuel Dalembert had 22 points and 16 rebounds, and the Sixers led by as many as 24 points in their first home playoff game since 2005.The Sixers proved their Game 1 victory was no fluke, doing everything Detroit normally did on the way to five straight trips to the Eastern Conference finals: Hit clutch shots, never lost composure and kept the pressure on all game to never let the Pistons go on a serious runs.Miller had the best all-around game, but he had plenty of help as four others scored double figures, including Dalembert's double-double.

Bobcats fire Vincent after 1 season; Brown may be candidate Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:34 EDT Michael Jordan took a chance on a young, inexperienced coach and it didn't work. Sam Vincent was fired Saturday after one turmoil-filled, non-playoff season running the Charlotte Bobcats.Vincent's dismissal was only minutes old when speculation turned to whether Jordan, the Bobcats' part-owner with the final say on all basketball decisions, would take a 180-degree turn with his next hire.Is the old reliable - and temperamental - Larry Brown poised to return to North Carolina, be reunited with his fellow former Tar Heel Jordan, and coach his ninth NBA team?Neither side was talking. Jordan was unavailable for questions and the team called off a conference call Saturday night.Brown didn't return phone calls, and his agent refused to discuss the Bobcats opening. But Joe Glass said his 67-year-old client is eager to coach again, after resigning as executive vice president of the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.
Jake Long, Chris Long, Matt Ryan selected 1-2-3 in NFL draft Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:04 EDT Things were going so normally, so predictably at Saturday's NFL draft. All six players the league invited to the festivities hit the stage in the first half-dozen selections. Yawn. Then came the wake-up call: trade after trade after trade, affecting 14 of the 31 first-round picks. At one point, five of seven selections had been bartered. A little while later, it was another five of six.Jake Long just sat back and smiled - right from the outset. The Michigan tackle already had signed with the Miami Dolphins as the top overall choice. He inked a five-year contract worth $57.75 million, $30 million of it guaranteed."I was a little more relaxed just knowing where I was going and just being here to make it official," Long said. "That solidified it all. It was just breathtaking to walk out there and shake the commissioner's hand and hold up that jersey. It was a dream come true."
Guevara leads TFC to third straight win Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:49 EDT Amado Guevara sure looked like a former MVP on Saturday.Guevara, the best player in Major League Soccer in 2004, had two goals to help Toronto FC defeat the Kansas City Wizards, 2-0, to set a franchise record with its third straight win.The Honduran international announced his return to MLS - he played four games last year with Chivas USA before leaving the league - by netting his first two goals since the 1996 season with New York."Guevara was a good signing for them, and that was proven true today," Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad said.Toronto FC goalie Greg Sutton had three saves for his second straight shutout. TFC had just five shutouts during its six-win, debut season last year.
Chiefs go big, take LSU defensive tackle Dorsey at No. 5 Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:49 EDT The Kansas City Chiefs started their big draft with big men. First, they used the fifth overall selection to grab Glenn Dorsey, a 297-pound All-American defensive lineman who helped lead LSU to the national championship. Then they swapped their 17th pick of the first round to Detroit to inch up two spots and take Virginia offensive lineman Branden Albert, a 316-pounder who can play both tackle and guard. In the second round, they took aim at a third glaring weakness on a team that finished with a nine-game losing streak and made Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Flowers the 35th player taken overall.Besides two slots in the first round, the Detroit trade appeared to cost little. The Chiefs swapped third-round picks with the Lions, going from the overall 66th pick to the 76th, and gave Detroit the extra fifth-round choice they received from Miami as compensation for Trent Green."The key to me is we got both players," said Bill Kuharich, the vice president for player personnel. "I never thought in my wildest dreams we'd get the opportunity to get both of those."

It was his first home run for the Padres and his first since Aug. 27 when he played for Philadelphia. The home run was also San Diego's first hit since the sixth inning as it won for just second time in 11 games.Glendon Rusch (1-2) allowed two hits in four innings with four strikeouts and two walks. |
Falcons take QB Matt Ryan with 3rd overall pick in NFL draft Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:31 EDT The Atlanta Falcons have a new quarterback and - they hope - a new face of the franchise. So long, Michael Vick. Hello, Matt Ryan. The Falcons chose the Boston College star with the third overall pick in Saturday's NFL draft. Ryan could compete for the starting job as a rookie. He'll also give the franchise a much-needed new identity.General manager Thomas Dimitroff, the former director of college scouting in New England, compared Ryan's leadership qualities with those of Patriots star Tom Brady."I think with Matt, it's a combination of the intelligence he has, the leadership ability he has and I can't stress enough he has the ability to take not only the offense but the entire team," Dimitroff said."That's huge. I've been around a situation with New England where we had a quarterback that had the whole team. That was one aspect I think was very attractive as well as his skill set on the field."
Dixon and Wheldon up front, Danica to start 3rd at Kansas Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:16 EDT Less than a week past her historic first IndyCar victory, Danica Patrick put away her smile and went back to work on the racetrack Saturday, qualifying third for the IRL race at Kansas Speedway. While Target Chip Ganassi teammates Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon swept the front row in qualifying on the 1.5-mile oval, Patrick was again the focal point of attention as she backed up her big day last Sunday in Japan with a solid run."We arrived here with a good car and we had a good run here today," said Patrick, who had her game face back on after a week of celebrating her first win in 50 IndyCar Series starts. "The car is really well-balanced."Hopefully, we can get out in front of the red and white (Target) cars," she added.Dixon, who won from the pole in the season-opener last month at Homestead-Miami Speedway and finished third in Japan, took the top spot early in the Kansas qualifying with a four-lap average of 213.956 mph.
Scott holds 3-stroke lead heading into Byron Nelson finale Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:06 EDT Adam Scott figured there was no point wasting his good play to take money from his mates in Australia. So he cut short his trip home to get back on the PGA Tour."I came here to get in contention and win a golf tournament," said Scott, who stayed home only a week after the Masters. "I feel like I've been playing well this year and haven't quite done it. So I'm kind of pushing myself a little bit to do that."He only needs one more good round to win the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.Scott took a three-stroke lead into the final round after a 3-under 67 Saturday got him to 8-under 202. He birdied two of the last three holes, including a 3 1/2-footer at the 429-yard 18th."It all depends on Adam," said Bart Bryant, among the quartet of players three strokes behind. "Obviously, he's a world-class player. He has the potential to go out and kind of run away with it."
Rams go Long, too, taking Virginia defensive end Chris Long Sat, 26 Apr 2008 19:31 EDT The St. Louis Rams filled a need so glaring with the second pick of the NFL draft that they quickly anointed Virginia defensive end Chris Long a starter. The Rams' defensive ends totaled 5 1/2 sacks last year and top pass rusher Leonard Little is coming off toe surgery that limited him to one sack in seven games. That made the 6-foot-4, 275-pound Long, an All-American and son of Hall of Famer Howie Long, the logical selection over LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey on Saturday."I don't want to use the overused term, no-brainer," coach Scott Linehan said. "But I guess I'm going to have to. It's just going to be a great fit for us and a great fit for the city."I'm a little geeked up right now."In the second round the Rams addressed another need, taking Houston wide receiver Donnie Avery with the 33rd overall pick. Avery was the first wide receiver taken in the draft after being among the fastest at his position at the NFL Combine and St. Louis has need after the departure of Isaac Bruce, a second-rounder in 1994 and also the last player St. Louis took with the 33rd overall pick.
Raiders take Arkansas rusher McFadden at No. 4 in NFL draft Sat, 26 Apr 2008 19:06 EDT Lane Kiffin readily admits that running back was not a primary need for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL draft.Even though the Raiders are pretty well-stocked in the backfield, a player with the dynamic talents of Darren McFadden proved too tempting to pass up. Oakland selected the two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up with the fourth pick in the draft Saturday, giving last year's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a potential gamebreaker on offense."I knew months ago that this was the guy that we had to have and we had to figure out a way to get him," Kiffin said. "Hopefully, he was going to fall to us. ... Fortunately, he was still available and in the end we got everybody on the same page. We're all really excited."Considered by many scouts as the most talented player in the draft, McFadden has been compared by Kiffin to 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush, who starred at Southern California when Kiffin was the Trojans' offensive coordinator.McFadden ran for 4,590 yards and 41 touchdowns in three seasons for Arkansas, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He also showed off his passing skills with seven touchdown passes and caught 46 passes for a team that did not use its running backs as receivers very often.
Dario Franchitti breaks ankle in hard crash at Talladega Sat, 26 Apr 2008 19:06 EDT Dario Franchitti broke his left ankle in a hard crash Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway that sent him and another racer to a hospital for observation.Franchitti, who came to NASCAR this season as the reigning IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, also was treated for contusions and was unlikely to race Sunday in the Sprint Cup event.Chip Ganassi Racing didn't immediately announce a replacement driver, but David Stremme said following the race that the team had approached him about filling in. Stremme drove that car for two seasons before he was replaced by Franchitti this season.Franchitti wrecked when his car apparently lost its right rear tire on the 10th lap of the Nationwide Series race. His Dodge bounced into the wall and spun down the track, finally drifting down to the apron. It was there that the real damage was done - a car driven by Larry Gunselman slammed into his driver side door.
Burres pitches Orioles past White Sox in twin-bill opener Sat, 26 Apr 2008 18:46 EDT Brian Burres allowed three singles in eight shutout innings and Guillermo Quiroz hit his first major league homer Saturday as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 in the first game of a split doubleheader. The game was a makeup from Friday night's rainout.Burres (3-1) had faced one batter in the bottom of the first Friday before rains halted play and the game was eventually called. But the lefty was plenty sharp coming back Saturday, giving up singles to Jim Thome in the first, Carlos Quentin in the second and Toby Hall in the sixth.Winning a pitcher's duel against Chicago southpaw John Danks, Burres retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. He walked none and struck out four in his 98-pitch performance. The eight innings marked the longest outing of his career.
Sorenstam holds lead over hard-charging Creamer in Aventura Sat, 26 Apr 2008 18:36 EDT Annika Sorenstam struggled with her putting Saturday, yet shot a 1-under 70 to take a one-shot lead over Paula Creamer after three rounds of the Stanford International Pro-Am.Sorenstam, seeking her 71st LPGA Tour victory, has won five straight events when she's taken a one-shot lead into the final round. She chipped in for birdie on the second hole, then made 12 consecutive pars before a bogey at the par-3 15th. Her putter finally cooperated at 17, however, knocking down a birdie at the short par-3. And on the par-5 18th, after missing the island green to the left, Sorenstam squeezed a testy par putt in to hang on to the outright lead, pumping her fist as the final ball fell.Still, if momentum carries over from one day to the next, though, Creamer would have a big edge.Creamer - who hasn't finished higher than a tie for 21st in her previous three events - had a flawless, four-birdie, no-bogey round of 67, capped by a birdie at the finishing hole.

Kobe scores 22 as Lakers seize 3-0 series lead over Nuggets Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:39 EDT Once again, the Denver Nuggets couldn't keep their emotions or Kobe Bryant in check. Bryant scored 22 points and the Los Angeles Lakers took a 3-0 lead in their first-round series, routing the flustered Nuggets 102-84 on Saturday.Game 4 is Monday night, and the Nuggets are going to have to get more out of their All-Star duo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson if they hope to take the series back to the Staples Center.Anthony and Iverson were miserable from the floor, shooting a combined 10-for-38 and finishing with 16 and 15 points, respectively.Bryant was quiet, too, at least in the first half, when he scored eight points on 3-for-8 shooting. He scored nine quick points in the third quarter, however, to put the Lakers ahead 64-51 and quiet the Pepsi Center crowd that loves to hate him.
Jets make fans happy, take DE Vernon Gholston with 6th pick Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:34 EDT Vernon Gholston heard the crowd chanting his name while the New York Jets were on the clock, deliberating over their first-round draft selection.A few minutes later, the notoriously critical Jets fans welcomed the Ohio State defensive end to their team with satisfied cheers."It was crazy," Gholston said with a smile Saturday night at the Jets' headquarters, a few hours after being selected with the No. 6 overall pick. "When they got to the sixth pick and I was still on the board, they started chanting my name and everything. I guess they anticipated it."And, the Jets hope Gholston will further improve their pass rush in a big way. The speedy and powerful defensive end is expected to play outside linebacker in New York's 3-4 defense, which registered just 29 sacks last season. The 6-foot-4, 264-pound Gholston set an Ohio State record with 14 sacks last season despite facing double teams regularly. In the 3-4, he'll be asked to stand up as a linebacker more after playing mostly from a three-point stance in college.
Polanco, Ordonez lead Tigers to their 4th win in 5 games Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:24 EDT Placido Polanco and Magglio Ordonez each drove in a pair of runs, and Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 on Saturday for the Tigers' fourth win in five games.Tigers rookie Armando Galarraga didn't get a decision after pitching 5 2-3 hitless innings to start the game. He wound up allowing three runs - one earned - on three hits and two walks in six-plus innings.Todd Jones, the fourth Detroit pitcher, got his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.Because of injuries, the Tigers still haven't gotten their best lineup on the field - Carlos Guillen missed this one with a bruised knee - but they still managed to snap the Angels' three-game winning streak.Detroit went ahead in the first on Ordonez's RBI double, then increased the lead to 3-0 on Polanco's two-run single in the fifth.
Cowboys owner Jones on Pacman: Risk-reward needs to be done Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:04 EDT Jerry Jones isn't certain Adam "Pacman" Jones ever will play for the Dallas Cowboys. Yet the chance he might, and that he might play really well, was good enough for Jerry Jones to absorb the public-relations hit that comes with acquiring the cornerback known more for arrests than interceptions."To say I'm totally convinced (it will work out), no, I don't know that," the Cowboys owner said Saturday. "I don't know that at all. But I do know enough to do what we're doing. And I feel positive enough that it's worth that."Jerry Jones said the trade to acquire Pacman from the Tennessee Titans is done "for all practical purposes." Although they agreed in principle Wednesday, things have dragged on because the parameters and contract talks that have included both teams, Pacman, the league office and the players association."That's quite a convoluted situation," Jerry Jones said. The crux of the deal is Dallas giving up a fourth-round pick this year and a sixth next year, plus Jones getting a four-year contract. The Cowboys would get back a fourth-rounder in 2009 if Jones isn't reinstated, or a fifth-rounder if he returns then gets busted again.
Vandy silences Kentucky offense Sat, 26 Apr 2008 02:06 EDT Pedro Alvarez hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to lift Vanderbilt to a 3-2 victory over Kentucky Friday night at Hawkins Field.Strong pitching performances from Vanderbilt's Mike Minor and Kentucky's Chris Rusin kept the Southeastern Conference's top-hitting teams without any runs through the first five innings. The Commodores (31-11, 11-7 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Cats (31-11, 9-10) answered with their first run in the top of the seventh.Vanderbilt broke the 1-all tie with a run in the seventh and then broke a 2-all tie on the run-scoring double by Alvarez with two outs in the eighth.Minor went six innings and gave up five hits and one unearned run while striking out nine Kentucky batters. Chase Reid gave up a run in relief and Russell Brewer (2-1) came on to get the win by pitching 12/3 innings of no-hit ball to end the game.
Lexington finds a spark but not a win Sat, 26 Apr 2008 02:06 EDT Even though the Legends lost -- for a fifth game in a row and for a 10th in a row at home -- there was a glimmer of hope Friday night. The Legends showed a spark that has been missing most of the season, but succumbed 12-11 in 11 innings to the Lakewood BlueClaws."We had a long meeting (Thursday) night after the game, for an hour, with position players," Legends Manager Gregg Langbehn said. "Just talked about a lot of things, things I won't go into. But I saw a different attitude tonight. I saw guys that never stopped fighting the whole night. ... I thought we did a great job. (But) we didn't pitch very well."While the Legends dropped to 1-11 at Applebee's Park, Lakewood climbed to .500 overall (11-11).The teams combined for 36 hits, 17 by the Legends.
It's finally D-day for Cats Sat, 26 Apr 2008 02:06 EDT The stopwatches have gone back in the drawer, and all of the tests, evaluations and interviews have already been put on file. The NFL Draft is finally here, and Andre Woodson is one guy who's happy that the whole draft process is over."I'm glad it's finally here," Woodson said on Friday. "This whole process really humbles you. You've got critics trying to tear you apart and saying every little thing that's wrong with you. Now I don't have to worry about all that stuff. I'll get to figure out where I'm going and then get to mini-camp and get to work."Woodson was viewed as a surefire first-rounder when Kentucky played its way into the nation's top 10 midway through the season, but his stock fell after a heavily scrutinized performance at the Senior Bowl. Woodson is now projected to go anywhere from the late second round to late fourth. One of the knocks on Woodson is what scouts have labeled as a hitch in his delivery, but Woodson said that the supposed hitch hasn't been an issue with teams he's talked to.
Devils take two, build confidence Sat, 26 Apr 2008 02:06 EDT It seemed only fitting that Karneisha Johnson's rise ball was the pitch that was working best for her Friday night.Behind Johnson and several timely hits, Henry Clay showed it's a team on the rise. The Devils ended eight-plus years of frustration against one of the 11th Region's perennial powers by downing visiting Lafayette 3-2 Friday in the Lexington Fastpitch Showcase."This was a huge, huge win for confidence," said Johnson, who pitched seven complete innings, allowing three hits and fanning nine despite being off for a week with a sore throwing arm. "I was pretty confident in my team and in myself that I could throw strikes."No. 24 Lafayette made it interesting in the top of the seventh when Sam Youngblood's double sent in a run and then her courtesy runner -- and the tying run -- advanced to third. But Johnson struck out the final two batters to get the win.

Central rolls past GHS Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:55 -0500 Throughout her time in the Warren Central softball program, Addie Dodson has demonstrated an ability to hit the ball. But lately, Dodson has been proving another ability on the diamond - her pitching prowess. Dodson, subbing for injured Lady Dragon starter Sarah Stanfield, threw a complete-game five-hitter Saturday as Warren Central blasted visiting Glasgow, 11-4. “I’m feeling pretty good, I’m pitching a lot more so it’s getting better,” said Dodson, who has filled in for the past few games as Stanfield recovers from a leg injury. “It’s kind of tough when you just get thrown in there, but I’ve been pitching more now and overall I’m feeling pretty good.” Dodson’s powerful bat also helped her cause, as she finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. “I think now it’s about her fourth start and she’s starting to feel comfortable in that position,” Warren Central coach Glenn Woodard said. “When you lose a starter, someone has to step up in that position and then you see what your team is made of. “And obviously we’re starting to back her very well, and we have confidence in her and it’s showing.” With Glasgow holding a three-run advantage heading into the bottom of the third, the Warren Central bats began to heat up. The Lady Dragons crossed five runners to grab a 6-3 lead. Dodson delivered an RBI double to score Casey Lloyd - who singled one batter earlier - to get things started. Krystin Corder then reached on an error, which allowed Dodson to score. Two hitters later, Kelsey Beech brought home both Corder and Mikayla Love - who drew a walk - with a two-RBI double before Love was brought in a batter later by a Mason Donisi single. The Lady Dragons added two more in the fourth and another three in the sixth - both with solid hitting and the ability to take advantage of several Glasgow errors. The Lady Scotties, who were missing several seniors due to a senior trip, committed eight errors on the afternoon. “It’s pretty exciting, the last few games we just didn’t have everything on the same page so this is big,” Woodard said. “The defense is working well and the bats are starting to come around, and that’s what we’re working on because the District (14 Tournament) is coming around and that’s the most important thing. “And obviously we’re going to have Greenwood in the first round and we’ll have to have everything clicking then.” Glasgow coach Steven Murphy said the most important thing his team can do after its performance Saturday is to learn from it. “There were probably four or five makable plays that weren’t errors that we didn’t make a play on, and we try not to make excuses but we just have to make those plays,” Murphy said. “We told them that from now on we need to make those plays and bounce right back on Monday. “We can’t mope around and dwell on it, we’ve got to bounce back - that’s the key thing, how we bounce back.” Blair Dennison went the distance and took the loss for Glasgow (11-10), while Morgan Smith led the way offensively going 1-for-3 with a solo home run. For Central (6-10) offensively, Corder finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Lloyd added two singles and two runs scored as well. With one final regular season district game left against Warren East on Monday, Dodson said she hopes that the offensive outburst - along with the nearing return of the team’s ace pitcher - will provide a boost for Central, as the Lady Dragons will have their hands full come tournament time. “It’s a real confidence booster,” she said. “We’ve got East on Monday so hopefully we can take this and build off of this and do something with it.” GHS 300 000 1 — 4 5 8 WCHS 105 203 X — 11 11 3 WP: Dodson; LP: Dennison.

WKU Briefs: Western Kentucky evens series at Florida Atlantic Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:55 -0500 At Boca Raton, Fla., the Western Kentucky baseball team pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs as it evened its weekend series against Florida Atlantic with an 11-5 win over the Owls on Saturday afternoon at FAU Stadium. The win ended a two-game skid for the Toppers as they improved to 24-18 and 11-9 in the Sun Belt Conference. FAU fell to 24-17 and 11-7 in the league. With the score at 2-1 FAU, Scott Kaskie reached on an error to start the third, a Wade Gaynor double scored him all the way from first to tie the game at 2-2. Chad Cregar followed with his second home run in as many days - and 17th of the season - to put WKU in front 4-2. WKU loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before FAU reliever Mike Gipson walked Gaynor to force home Jeremy Coleman. That would be the RBI of the inning for the Toppers, but another run scored on a Gipson wild pitch, and Kaskie came home when Terrence Dayleg reached on another Florida Atlantic error to put WKU in front 7-2. Matt Payton - who had not homered in the first 286 bats of his collegiate career - hit a long ball for the second straight day as his two-run shot over the wall in right stretched the Hilltopper advantage to 9-2. After throwing six innings and allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts, starter Matt Ridings (8-2) gave way to the Hilltopper bullpen for the final three innings. Offensively, Cregar finished with a game-high three hits, while Matt Rice, Jeremy Coleman and Payton each finished with two hits. Payton also drove in a team-high three runs. Travis Ozga finished with three hits to lead the Owls. The teams will play the rubber match of the series at noon today. WKU softball earns sweep On a day when the Western Kentucky softball team honored its lone senior, Shelby Smith, the Hilltoppers responded with a doubleheader sweep of Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama on Saturday at the WKU Softball Complex. WKU won game one 8-2 and followed with a 7-5 victory in the second contest. The Hilltoppers (22-26, 6-13 SBC) brought the bats to the yard on Saturday as WKU hit three home runs that accounted for seven runs over the two games, including two blasts that led to six runs in game one. The Toppers loaded the bases in the third inning on two walks and a single by Rachelle Boucher before Lindsay Antone cranked her 12th home run on the season in grand-slam fashion over the centerfield wall and into the parking lot. The homer tied the single-season record held by Jessie Richardson. Then an inning later Boucher nailed a two-run shot over the center field wall that scored Terri Ellingsworth, after she singled. Evelyne Pare reached first base on an error to start the fourth inning and then scored on the Jaguars first hit of the contest, a double to left center by Courtney Chigaros to cut the gap to 4-1. Ryan Rogge (13-13) pitched a complete game - her 12th of the year - while allowing just three hits, two unearned runs and striking out seven batters. Boucher finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and three runs. Beth Pilgrim (10-13) took the loss after allowing six runs over five innings. The Toppers batted around in the second inning of game two and before the damage was done, WKU had built a 6-0 lead. Antone singled up the middle to score Elizabeth Ferrell and Boucher and then Shelby Smith followed with a RBI single to score Antone. USA (21-28, 5-15 SBC) got right back into the game in the fifth after scoring three runs. A sacrifice fly by Amanda Hudson scored a run and a single from Tara Donaldson scored another run for the Jaguars to cut the lead to 7-4. Ashley Contreras then hit her second blast on the year with a solo shot to right center in the third. Jennifer Kempf (9-11) grabbed the win in six innings of work while striking out three. The first seven hitters in the lineup each tallied a hit. Both teams finish the three-game set with a single game at 1 p.m. today.

| Outdoors: BG anglers make winning decision Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:56 -0500 “Strategy-wise, we don’t mess around, we make a decision and go.” Last Saturday, Bowling Green anglers Mike Tinsley and Tim Gill developed a winning strategy for the Crappie USA Tournament on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. Choosing to begin their morning 20 miles from the weigh-in station and fishing their way back, the experienced duo knew their chances of taking home the top prize were better than average. “We had finished second down there last year and had a good feeling about it,” Mike said. However, the fishing did not start on the best note. After trying straight minnows for two hours and not even bringing a slab into the boat, “Tim decided to tie on a red and chartreuse jig and within 30 seconds he had a fish,” Mike explained. “Then he dropped it back down and not even a minute later caught the 2.11-pounder.” The team’s second fish was enough to snatch second place for the big crappie of the day, only falling seven-hundredths of a pound behind the heaviest fish. With their momentum building, the men continued to reel in lunkers. “We were fishing ledges that had stumps on them using Southern Pro umbrella tubes,” Mike said. “It is really hard to win one of these tournaments. It’s just like winning one of those big bass tournaments; you’ve gotta have a little luck on your side and find some fish.” While some folks might not even have known that crappie tournaments exist, Mike and Tim compare them to the largemouth circuits popularized on television. “You’ve got the best crappie fishermen in the world fishing these tournaments, just like on the bass circuit, except it is for crappie,” Mike said. Additionally, most keeper fish have to exceed well over one pound to be in the running. As the day wore on, Tim and Mike’s livewell began to swell with some fine specimen. “The seven that you weigh in have to be put back into the lake alive, but you can catch more to take home if you want,” Mike said. Experience and luck were certainly on the men’s side, when at the end of the tournament they posted a whopping seven-fish limit totaling 11.2 pounds; enough weight to clinch the tournament victory, with the closest competitor a half-pound shy of their tally. The win qualified Mike and Tim for the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic on Patoka Lake in October, but they don’t plan on waiting that long before bringing home another cardboard check. “We’ve got a regional next weekend in Grenada, Miss., and then May 17 we go to Kentucky Lake for a Crappie Master’s tournament,” Mike said. “If we had more sponsors we’d fish a tournament every weekend.” It is a wish that may soon become a reality if the Bowling Green men keep up their crappie streak.
