East 11-12s run away Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:30:00 -0500 LOUISVILLE — The Bowling Green East 11- and 12-year-old squad built an early lead Sunday and survived a mid-game surge by Lexington Eastern National to claim a 13-3 victory and improve to 2-0 in pool play in the Little League State Tournament at Valley Sports. “I’m really pleased with the way our pitching is going,” BG East coach Rick Kelley said. “We’re playing well. We’re in pretty good shape and we have a lot of pitching left for tomorrow. We still want to win it to keep the momentum going and have the number one seed in the pool.” Click here for more photos from the tournament. BG East built a comfortable lead by sending eight batters to the plate in the first. Nacarius Shannon and Grey Finwood both scored on wild pitches, Hunter Sewell had an RBI single and Quentin Cooke added an RBI double, making the score 4-0. “It was a nice not to be in a situation where we were behind,” Kelley said. “That was a change of pace, but that was good. It gave us the confidence to move forward.” East added a run in the third when Seaton Sheldon scored on a wild pitch, but Lexington rallied in the fourth. Charlie Siniger roped a two-run homer to center and Alec Bush got an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3. Lexington Eastern wouldn’t get any closer, as BG reliever Christopher McDaniel closed the door over the final 1 2/3 innings. “Christopher really came in and pitched well,” Kelley said. “He came into a pressure-packed situation and really did a good job.” BG East pulled away with a run in the fourth and finished it off with a seven-run burst in fifth, capped by a grand slam from Cooke. “That really sealed the deal,” Kelley said. “It can be anybody on any day.” Cooke finished the day with two hits and five RBIs. Sheldon and Zack Borden had two hits and Shannon scored three runs. BG East was to wrap up pool play against South London today. LE 000 300 - 3 BG 401 17x - 13
WC South rolls past Lex. Western Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:30:00 -0500 LOUISVILLE — Warren County South’s Adam Jones was a one-man show during Sunday’s 11-year-old Little League State Tournament game against Lexington Western National, helping lead South to a dominating 10-0 win in four innings at Valley Sports. Jones singled, doubled and capped his seven-RBI day with a grand slam to help Warren County improve to 2-0 in pool play. “I think we’re in good shape to get to (Tuesday’s semifinals),” Warren County manager Jim King said. “We definitely want the one seed. We broke it down into four steps and this is the third step. We want the number one seed and then be able to move onto the next phase.” Jones got Warren County going in the first with an RBI double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. King said Jones was motivated to make up for that mistake. “Adam hit that rope and drove in the first run of the game, but he was very disappointed in himself for getting caught coming to third,” King said. “To come back and keep his head in the game, that was nice.” He got a chance one inning later, following Cameron Shyrock’s two-run double with a two-run single that made the score 5-0. Two batters later, Jones scored on a groundout to give South a six-run advantage. South finished off its scoring in the third when Jones smacked a grand slam to dead center, making the score 10-0. After Shyrock limited Lexington to one hit in the first three innings, Lexington Western tried to avoid the 10-run mercy rule in the fourth with a mini-rally off Jones, who came in to relieve Shyrock. Chase Caldwell singled with one out and tried to score on Tyler Newton’s double, but was tagged out sliding into home. “I was really happy to see them preserve the shutout on the relay,” King said. “Our centerfielder hustled over and got to the ball and threw it to Wes, who threw it in. That was a great catch and tag from Lucas (Holland). These kids take a lot of pride in that.” Lexington then put runners at first and third, before Jones got a groundout to end the game. Warren County South finished with eight hits and 10 of South’s 11 players reached base at least once. “We hit up and down the lineup,” King said. “All 11 of them can hit. That makes my job a lot easier.” Warren County South wraps up pool play today against South Oldham at 5 p.m. LW 000 0 - 0 WC 154 x - 10
Richmond National 9-10s rally past BG East Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:30:02 -0500 LOUISVILLE — If there’s one thing Little League baseball does for children, it teaches them lessons. Although it might not have been a happy one, the Bowling Green East 9- and 10-year-olds learned a valuable lesson Sunday. BG East held an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Richmond National then sent 19 batters to the plate - pounding out nine hits and scoring 13 runs - to come back and steal a 13-11 win in pool play at the Little League State Tournament at Valley Sports. “They basically learned that we’ve got to play six innings, the whole six innings,” BG East manager Bill Jones said. “When we make a bad play or something, we can’t put our head down and drag about it. We need to get over it and just move on to the next one. “The game’s over, the other team deserved to beat us because we didn’t play well.” East wasted no time early, sending 11 hitters to the plate in the top of the first inning and getting RBIs from Austin Zinoble, Alex Goff, Bobby Dillard and Jackson Gooding to grab an early 6-0 lead. The BG East lead grew in the top half of the fifth, as Gooding drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in Jacob Osborne, who had singled earlier. Ethan Wilson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Chandler Stephanski, who drew a walk, to make things 8-0. But it soon didn’t matter: In the bottom of the fifth, Richmond smacked nine hits and drew seven walks through two rotations of the batting order. Six of the Richmond runs came with two outs, while two of them were walked in with the bases loaded. East used four pitchers in the fifth inning alone. East wouldn’t go away, though, plating three more runs in the top of the sixth. Rob Warren finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead East, while Zinoble finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Will Daniel led the way for Richmond, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. After falling to 1-1 in pool play, BG East now faces an elimination game against host Valley Sports at 5 p.m. Jones said he still has faith his team will do well. “We’ll be a little stretched with our pitching because of today, but we’ll take tomorrow as a game we have to win,” Jones said. “We’ve got to win it. “Whatever happens, happens - I’m still confident that we can play well against any team in the state, we’ve just got to do it.” BGE 600 023 - 11 RN 000 0(13)x - 13
Blann claims two titles at Buick Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:30:03 -0500 Jordan Blann’s Buick Invitational victory Sunday turned out to be twice as fun. Not only did Blann win at 6-under par, two strokes better than runner-up Matt Fuqua, but Blann’s victory catapulted him to the City Amateur Championship Series title. The three-tournament, points-based series was capped by this weekend’s Buick Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club. “It’s pretty cool,” said Blann, a Bowling Green product now playing at the University of Kentucky. “I couldn’t tell you what to think really, but I know it’s pretty cool to have something like that on your wall or in your trophy case or whatever.” Both Blann and Fuqua - who entered the weekend in second and third, respectively, in the points standings - shot final-round, 2-under 70s on Sunday. City amateur leader Brian Eaton put himself out of contention with an opening-round 77 on Saturday, meaning either Blann or defending city amateur champion Fuqua would leave with this year’s title. Blann took one-shot overall lead and two-shot lead against Fuqua into Sunday. The cushion ballooned to a four-stroke lead over Fuqua after 10 holes. But Blann then bogeyed three of his next four holes and Fuqua got to within one at 4-under with a birdie on No. 17. “I had to go for everything,” Fuqua said. “I had chances all day and Jordan opened up a little door for us to have a chance to win or go into a playoff.” Blann missed short par putts on Nos. 11 and 13, plus put a shot in the water on No. 14 to prevent himself from staying in total command. “I kind of got lackadaisical on the back nine,” Blann said. “I wasn’t really paying attention to a lot of things, missed short putts.” But Blann held off Fuqua with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. Fuqua put his second shot just short of the green when Blann’s second shot went right of the pin. A fine chip put him within a few feet of the hole and he wrapped up the championships with the putt. Fuqua settled for par. “I felt some heat,” Blann said. “I hit a terrible 5-iron (on my second shot) - I can’t explain how bad it was. I recovered well with the chip. The lie wasn’t great but I had plenty of green.” Said Fuqua: “I knew I had to make birdie and maybe he’d par. I just had too much ground to make up.” John Kirby finished third at 3-under after shooting a 72. Hunter Bowen and Brent Clark took fourth at 1-under. Blann’s victory at the Buick Invitational was his first victory in a city amateur series tournament since last year’s Paul Walker Memorial - the opening tournament of the series. A third-place finish in this year’s Paul Walker and fifth-place result in the Pickens Amateur Championship put Blann in contention for this year’s city amateur title. Still, a city amateur championship without a tournament title would have been a bit hollow. “It would have been terrible,” Blann admitted. “I was on a little dry spell. I wanted to win one this summer. I wanted to win all three this summer, but sometimes that’s the way the ball rolls.” Although Fuqua relinquished the city amateur championship Sunday, his summer still included a Paul Walker championship. “Any time you ever have a win in this little series, I feel like it’s a successful summer,” Fuqua said. “You can never look down upon a win. Obviously, second place is not as good as first, but that’s part of it.”

Fifth Third Bank tennis: Top women's seed falls Mon, 21 Jul 2008 07:16 EDT The top seed on the women's side of the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships is gone, and so is a top-100 player for the men. No. 1 seed Katie Ruckert fell 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Sloane Stephens, a high school sophomore-to-be out of Boca Raton, Fla. The 15-year-old is the country's top-ranked recruit for the class of 2011, according to www.tennisrecruiting.net. Ruckert, 25, a former University of Texas star, had reached her highest WTA ranking of 404 coming into the tournament at Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. Stephens is no stranger to the UK courts, where she reached the semifinals of the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby in 2007. She'll face Maureen Diaz in the second round of qualifying Monday. The other seven seeded women survived. On the men's side, Rylan Rizza knocked off the 93rd-ranked player in the world in Sunday's last round of qualifying and now faces a first-round matchup with top-seeded Dudi Sela of Israel on Monday. Rizza was 841 spots behind 6-foot-7 Chris Guccione in the rankings but beat him 7-6 (3), 6-3.

NBA stars put "team' back in Team USA Mon, 21 Jul 2008 03:12 EDT LAS VEGAS . Three weeks wasn't enough time to prepare for the last Olympics. So now the United States is trying three years. The Americans open training camp Monday, but they're much closer to the end of their Olympic preparations than the beginning. With the same coaching staff and many of the same players back for their third straight summer, much of the work has already been done. There isn't the same rush to cram everything in as there was four years ago, when the Americans were together for 20 days before their first game in Athens . a 92-73 blowout loss against Puerto Rico that was their worst defeat ever in the Olympics. They lost twice more and left with a bronze medal, citing a lack of preparation as one of their biggest problems. Carmelo Anthony was on that team and says this one can't use that excuse.
Favre on wish list of several teams Mon, 21 Jul 2008 07:33 EDT After an off-season that closely resembled a soap opera . the Patriots' spying scandal, the Steelers' family squabble over ownership, and Brett Favre's flip-flop over his future . NFL training camps will be a relief. They start this week (the Jets' rookies were the first to report, last Wednesday). With the Super Bowl champion Giants opening the regular season against the Washington Redskins on Sept. 4, here is a look at the teams to watch, for better or worse. Keep an eye on New England Patriots: Demoralized by squandering a perfect season? Please. A year ago, the Patriots used a last-minute playoff loss to the Colts as fuel to pound opponents into submission. So imagine what losing a Super Bowl and football immortality will do for their disposition. Also, they have younger linebackers, an obvious need after the defense yielded that final Giants drive. Even with the easiest schedule in the league, another assault on perfection led by quarterback Tom Brady is hard to imagine. More likely is something close and maybe a different outcome in the Super Bowl. Miami Dolphins: Of course they are not going to the playoffs this season. But is anything more fun than watching Bill Parcells do a makeover of a franchise? There has already been a significant uptick in talent over the team that won one game last season, but the Dolphins have to identify, once and for all, their quarterback. If they do, Miami will be back on the path to winning, no matter how long the mercurial Parcells sticks around.

Schleck takes yellow jersey in Tour de France Mon, 21 Jul 2008 12:46 EDT The Tour de France still has no definitive leader through 15 stages. One trend is quite clear, though: Team CSC is the strongest squad. Bjarne Riis' riders continually attacked race favorite Cadel Evans as the Tour hit the Alps on Sunday, and CSC's Frank Schleck took the overall leader's yellow jersey from Evans. "We decide the race - or at least make it hard and put the pressure on, because we have the strongest team," said Riis, CSC's sporting director and the 1996 Tour winner. "The team is strong and we're following our plan. We did what we wanted today. All of our riders know what it means to be a team." Schleck now holds a 7-second lead over Bernhard Kohl of the Gerolsteiner team in the overall standings, with Evans 1 second further back in third position. On the uphill finish to Prato Nevoso that concluded stage 15, Schleck and his younger brother, Andy, along with another CSC climbing specialist - Carlos Sastre of Spain - exposed Evans' biggest problem: a lack of support riders in the mountains.
Olympic city cuts traffic to clean up the air Mon, 21 Jul 2008 12:36 EDT Half of Beijing's drivers left their cars at home Monday and took public transportation instead on the first workday under new restrictions meant to clear this city's notoriously polluted skies before next month's Olympics. Under a two-month plan that started Sunday, half of the capital's 3.3 million cars will be removed from city streets on alternate days, depending on whether the license plate ends in an odd or even number. Those caught driving on days they shouldn't will be fined $14, a pricey penalty even for China's capital. It wasn't known how many tickets had been issued; phones rang unanswered all day at the Beijing police traffic management bureau. Drivers with even-numbered plates were forced Monday to take public transportation, and the government estimated that that would mean an extra 4 million commuters. To meet the demand, the city was trying to shorten the time between subway trains from three minutes to two. But that triggered some glitches Monday as officials tried out a new signal system, the official Xinhua News Agency said on its Web site.
Tour's new leader living in the moment Mon, 21 Jul 2008 08:28 EDT PRATO NEVOSO, Italy . Frank Schleck of Luxembourg likes to attack. He also likes the look of his yellow jersey. He became the new leader of the Tour de France on Sunday. Whether that lasts remains to be seen. The race is now in the Alps, where countless riders have been broken. .Don't kick me while I'm happy,. Schleck said. His jump to the front of cycling's showpiece event came on a day when Simon Gerrans of Australia won the 15th stage. Gerrans was not chased by the leading contenders. It was the first time he won a stage in four Tour appearances, a victory he called a .beautiful thing..
Sports briefs Mon, 21 Jul 2008 03:12 EDT Golf Perry finishes tied for sixthafter 64 in last round Kenny Perry 's final-round 64 wasn't enough to get the win, but he said the finish vindicated his decision to skip the British Open for the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. Perry closed brilliantly to get to 12-under and finish tied for sixth with three other golfers. He had been criticized for skipping the Open to play here after winning three of his last five tournaments, including last week's John Deere Classic. He chose to play in Milwaukee because he felt he had the best chance of picking up points so he can make this year's Ryder Cup team. The event is being held in his native Kentucky, at Valhalla.
