| Little League: Big win for WC South Fri, 27 Jun 2008 21:57:13 -0500 Standing at the plate with his team facing a 3-0 deficit, Michael Hicks changed the momentum in his team’s favor Friday with one swing in the third inning. Hicks doubled to right field to score Alex Stackhouse and Grant Noble and Warren County South scored another run to tie the score. Still, Hicks wasn’t finished pushing his team over the hump. Hicks tripled with the bases loaded in the fourth, scoring Landan Bybee, Noble and Jacob Lewis. Hicks went 2-for-3 and collected four RBIs to help South to a 7-3 win over Bowling Green West in a 9-and-10-year-old game in the area Little League Tournament at Phil Moore Park. “I feel really good right now,” Hicks said. “But it is not all about hitting, it is also about defense. I am pretty happy to get this win tonight.” South coach Brian Bybee was proud that his team was able to rally back. “In the area tournament, it is very big to come out and get your first win,” Bybee said. “The first two games are very important and to get those two games because it enables you to move on to district. Our bats came alive late in the game and that is a big win. West has a very good ballclub and they battled us very hard.” South finished the game with five hits, led by Hicks and Noble, who finished 2-for-3. West finished with seven hits and was led by Austin McElain, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Brandon Miller finished 2-for-2. McElain got his team going in the third hitting with a two-RBI double to center to score DeAngelo Wilson and Trevor Stockton. McElain reached home just a few minutes later on a wild pitch to give West a 3-0 lead in the third. “It was a good time,” McElain said. “We didn’t show up as good as we have. We just need to do better tomorrow. I came in and hit it and we got fired up and just kept hitting the ball.” West coach Greg Disman was impressed with his team’s effort against a “talented” South team. “We probably gained more respect tonight than the West has in the last decade,” Disman said. “Those kids over there are travel team players and they have a lot of experience over there. I am the proudest losing coach here tonight.” South plays at 6 p.m. tonight against Warren County North at Phil Moore Park. “We’ve got a lot of things that we need to do tomorrow,” Bybee said. “It is a big field out here at Phil Moore Park. It is 210 feet and the outfielders have to run a long way to get the ball in and that is what we need to work on.” West plays against Bowling Green East at 8 p.m. at Phil Moore Park. | Little League: Bowling Green East rolls in tourney start Fri, 27 Jun 2008 21:57:14 -0500 One year after winning the 11-year-old state Little League tournament, manager Rick Kelley said his Bowling Green East All-Stars were hungry to prove themselves again. Maybe more like starving, considering their 36-run performance on Friday. East opened up the 11- and 12-year-old Little League All-Stars Area Tournament by thumping Bowling Green West 36-0 in four innings at Phil Moore Park. East’s 11-12 squad has virtually the same make-up of last year’s state championship team. And it looked like a state contender on Friday. “I think they are definitely hungry to prove what they did last showed their talent,” Kelley said. “They are eager to get into tournament play. And it’s always good just to get into the flow of tournament play.” Kelley said his team’s cohesiveness highlighted by last year’s championship is an advantage as this year’s postseason begins. “They’ve all played together for two or three years,” Kelley said. “I think that helps. They all know each other. They’re familiar with me. I think that part is a critical part of gelling together.” East took command immediately with a 15-run first-inning capped by Nacarius Shannon’s three-run home run. It was one of three home runs on the day. Grey Finwood and Devin Hayes also hit homers. Hayes, BG East’s No. 8 hitter, missed hitting for the cycle by only a triple and knocked in six runs. “Really and truly we’re not hesitant to go one through 12 in terms of hitting the ball,” Kelley said. “All 12 of them can put the bat on the ball and make good contact. I think we’re in good shape there.” All 12 East stars scored at least a pair of runs. Zach Sibalich knocked in seven runs, highlighted by a two-run triple. Just as dominating was East’s pitching. The quartet of Christopher McDaniel, Shannon, Trevor Brewer and Sibalich retired all 12 BG West batters they faced. All 12 outs were strikeouts. “All of them are throwing in the mid- to upper 60s and they’ve got some good offspeed (stuff),” Kelley said. “I don’t know if we’ve got one pitcher that’s better than the others. We could rely on any of the four to carry us. That’s a tremendous luxury.” Tournament action continues tonight. East faces Warren County North at 6 p.m. and Warren County South faces Bowling Green West at 8 p.m. The round-robin event concludes Sunday. | Golf: Fuqua content with Pickens bull’s-eye Fri, 27 Jun 2008 21:57:14 -0500 There’s only one local golf championship currently missing from Matt Fuqua’s trophy case, but he’ll get an opportunity to fill that void this weekend. Fuqua highlights a field of 200 players in the Pickens Amateur Championship, which kicks off today and concludes Sunday at CrossWinds Golf Course. The Pickens represents the second leg of the city’s Amateur Championship Series. Fuqua, who is entering his senior season at Western Kentucky and was a standout at Franklin-Simpson, won the first leg of the series with his Paul Walker Memorial championship earlier this month. He’s also the defending champion of the Buick Invitational, which caps the series later this summer. “Any time you come off a win, you kind of feel like there’s always a bull’s-eye on your back,” Fuqua said. “And if there is a bull’s-eye, I guess I’m ready for it.” Fuqua’s history in the Pickens Amateur Championship includes some near misses. He’s finished second in two of the last three years. Two years ago, a round of 68 put him in contention after the first day. But Fuqua was disqualified for a scorecard mistake. “I feel like I’m due,” Fuqua said. “The last three years, I’ve felt like I’ve had a legitimate chance to win. I’ve been right there, just haven’t prevailed.” If Fuqua wins this weekend, he’ll have a strong grasp on the city’s Amateur Championship by winning the first two legs. Fuqua won the inaugural championship last year. “Winning the Walker was obviously a huge step of keeping the trophy home,” Fuqua said. “Step two is the Pickens. Hopefully I could play good enough to get some points and do well enough to win.” Fuqua won’t have to beat the defending Pickens champion in order to capture this year’s title. Justin Perry, son of PGA golfer Kenny Perry, won last year’s rain-shortened tournament at 4-under-par. But according to CrossWinds golf professional Phil Jones, Perry is unavailable to play this weekend because he’s attending a wedding. Meanwhile, other past champions are in the field, including Mike Tinnat, John Kirby, Rodney Norris and Jordan Blann, who could all be in contention. Blann, a University of Kentucky golfer, finished second in the Paul Walker Memorial earlier this month. |

For Stephanie Hightower, memories of some trying Trials Sat, 28 Jun 2008 02:21 EDT EUGENE, Ore. . More than a quarter-century has passed since Stephanie .Hightower hurdled herself onto the United States Olympic team . the ill-fated Olympic team, as it turned out. The year was 1980, and a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics crushed many an athlete's dream. The boycott was in response to the Soviet invasion of . imagine this . Afghanistan. Hightower, a graduate of old Stuart High School in Louisville and Ohio State University, and the rest of the 1980 Olympic track and field team were honored Friday, the opening day of this year's Olympic Trials. Fittingly, the tribute came at the Hayward Field facility where the 1980 trials took place. Hightower's winning time in the 100-meter hurdles at Eugene was 12.90 seconds, then the second-fastest ever by an American. From 1977 through 1980, she was undefeated over the 60- and 100-meter hurdles. Also making the 1980 team in the hurdles were Candy Young and Benita Fitzgerald.
Federer cruises, Ferrer falls in third round at Wimbledon Fri, 27 Jun 2008 21:47 EDT Five-time champion Roger Federer won his third-round match in straight sets at Wimbledon on Friday, while fifth- seeded David Ferrer fell out of the tournament. After rain forced play to be delayed for 90 minutes, the top-seeded Federer rolled over France's Marc Gicquel, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. The Swiss Federer, looking to capture his sixth consecutive title here, extended his grass-court winning streak to 62 matches. The top-seeded/world No. 1 Federer is also now riding a 37-match winning streak at Wimbledon. Bjorn Borg holds the record with 41 straight victories. Federer's win will set up a compelling fourth-round match with 20th-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, who advanced after beating Italy's Simone Bolelli, 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). The Australian Hewitt was the last player other than Federer to win the Wimbledon title, back in 2002.
Mears to leave Hendrick Motorsports Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:46 EDT Casey Mears will be looking for a new ride in 2009. Hendrick Motorsports said Friday that Mears, who has been with the team since 2007 and moved to the No. 5 Chevrolet to replace Kyle Busch, will be released at the end of this season. "We've put a ton of emphasis on the No. 5 program," team owner Rick Hendrick said in a release. "It's been a total team effort, and Casey has worked as hard as anyone to help us improve. We've tested more than we ever have, but the results just haven't come. "None of us, Casey included, have been satisfied with the situation this season. But he's confident there are other options out there for him in 2009, and we feel like Hendrick Motorsports will have some opportunities, too." The Hendrick team is one of the most powerful in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, but the performance of the No. 5 has not kept up with his teammates. Heading into Sunday race at New Hampshire International Speedway, Mears has only three top-10 finishes and is 24th in the season standings, while teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are all in the top seven.
Dutrow says barn made a mistake Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:29 EDT Big Brown trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. has taken responsibility for a positive drug test on another horse he trains, but is still appealing his 15-day suspension. Salute the Count was found to have more than the allowable limit of Clenbuterol - a drug that enables horses to breathe easier - after the 8-year-old gelding finished second in a race at Churchill Downs on May 2, the day before Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby. "It's just a mistake in the barn that happened," Dutrow said. Dutrow said Friday at Aqueduct he was appealing because "I need to be with my horses now." The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority has yet to set an appeal date, leaving Dutrow free to keep training. "It's just a mistake that happened," Dutrow said. "But it's not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be."
Mayo, Love exchanging addresses in big trade Fri, 27 Jun 2008 10:21 EDT O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love played against each other in college as crosstown rivals in the Pac-10. Now they've been traded for one another in a big draft-night deal. Mayo, chosen third overall by Minnesota is heading to Memphis in a deal that sends Love, the fifth pick, to the Timberwolves as part of an eight- player trade. The deal will also send guards Marko Jaric and Greg Buckner, and forward Antoine Walker to the Grizzlies, while the Timberwolves got shooting guard Mike Miller, forwards Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins. The most prized recruit in USC basketball history, Mayo decided to leave school after only one season when he averaged 20.7 points and 4.5 rebounds. He has the ability to play both shooting and point guard positions. Love was taken in the draft right after UCLA teammate Russell Westbrook was chosen by Seattle. The 6-foot-10 Love played just one season at UCLA, but dominated the inside with 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds. Love's father, Stan, was selected ninth overall by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1971 NBA Draft.

It's the best two-year, non-probation UK win total since Bear Bryant won 19 in 1950 and '51. Kentucky will enter the 2008 football season having won 13 of its last 19 games. The last time it enjoyed a similar stretch of success was when Jerry Claiborne's Cats won 14 of 20 in 1984 and the first part of '85. |

Federer, Hewitt to meet in 4th round at Wimbledon Sat, 28 Jun 2008 07:07 EDT Roger Federer's next opponent at Wimbledon is the last man to win the title before the Swiss star began his run of five straight championships. And beyond that could be a matchup with the last player to beat him at Wimbledon six years ago. After a relatively easy stroll through the first three rounds, things could start to get trickier for Federer as he continues his march toward a sixth championship at the All England Club. Next up in the round of 16 on Monday will be Lleyton Hewitt, the scrappy Australian who won the title in 2002. "With him being a former No. 1, former champion here, I think it's an intriguing match for both of us," Federer said. The two have met 20 times - with Federer winning the last 11 dating back to the 2004 Australian Open and holding an overall edge of 13-7. In their only two previous Wimbledon matchups, Federer won in the 2004 quarterfinals and 2005 semifinals.
Buffalo Bills' Lynch loses license over hit-run Sat, 28 Jun 2008 04:52 EDT Bills running back Marshawn Lynch had his driver's license revoked in traffic court on Friday after saying he didn't know he hit someone while driving on a Buffalo street last month. Administrative Law Judge Thomas Gagola found Lynch's behavior on May 31 "constituted a reckless disregard of human life or property." He also imposed the maximum $100 fine and $50 surcharge after Lynch pleaded guilty to failure to exercise due care toward a pedestrian. Lynch, the Bills' first-round draft pick in 2007 out of California, was driving his 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV in the city's bar district at 3:30 a.m. when he struck a 27-year-old Ontario woman and kept going. "It was raining real hard, there was a dancing pedestrian in the middle of the street," the 22-year-old Lynch said before the hearing. "I slowed down to let her go and continued on my way home. I didn't know my car had hit anyone or anything." Investigators believe the woman Lynch struck was near the woman he saw dancing.
Ponson silences Delgado, pitches Yanks to DH split Sat, 28 Jun 2008 04:52 EDT Sidney Ponson pitched a gem in his return to the New York Yankees, silencing Carlos Delgado and the rest of the New York Mets for a 9-0 victory Friday night and a split of their two-ballpark doubleheader. Delgado dominated the day game at Yankee Stadium. He set a Mets record with nine RBIs and hit a grand slam for one of his two homers in a 15-6 rout that lasted 3 hours, 54 minutes. After both teams got police escorts for their rush-hour bus trips to Shea Stadium, Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs as the Yankees enjoyed a blowout of their own. Ponson outpitched Pedro Martinez with six shutout innings, and the Bronx Bombers broke loose in Queens for their first win in four Subway Series games this season. Robinson Cano homered and drove in three runs for the Yankees, who have won 10 of 14 overall. Derek Jeter extended his season-high hitting streak to 15 games with an RBI double off the center-field fence. With a history of off-the-field trouble, Ponson pitched well for Texas this season but was cut for being a disruption to the team.
Goodell: NFL rookie pay scale 'ridiculous' Sat, 28 Jun 2008 04:47 EDT NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said it's "ridiculous" to reward untested rookies with lucrative contracts, and wants the issue addressed in contract talks. "There's something wrong about the system," Goodell said Friday. "The money should go to people who perform." Goodell referred to Michigan tackle Jake Long's five-year, $57.75 million contract - with $30 million guaranteed. Long was the first overall draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in April. "He doesn't have to play a down in the NFL and he already has his money," Goodell said during a question-and-answer period at the end of a weeklong sports symposium at the Chautauqua Institution. "Now, with the economics where they are, the consequences if you don't evaluate that player, you can lose a significant amount of money. "And that money is not going to players that are performing. It's going to a player that never makes it in the NFL. And I think that's ridiculous."

Ethier, who came into the game for defensive purposes in the top of the seventh, hit his three-run shot off Justin Speier in the bottom half for a six-run cushion. The Dodgers had scratched out two runs against Saunders in the fifth, on Jeff Kent's sacrifice fly and James Loney's RBI single. Saunders allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in five innings. He walked four |

The Mariners (29-50) have the worst record in the majors while the Padres (32-49) are tied with the Washington Nationals for the second-worst. | A's win seventh straight against Giants Sat, 28 Jun 2008 01:17 EDT The Oakland Athletics have owned the San Francisco Giants in interleague play. Dana Eveland pitched his second-longest outing of the year to win his second straight decision, Jack Hannahan drove in two runs and the A's extended their winning streak against the Giants to seven games with a 4-1 victory Friday night. The streak is Oakland's longest ever in the Bay Area rivalry, and the A's also have won 10 of the last 11 and 15 of 19. "These things are streaky," San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy said before the game. "Sometimes things are hard to explain." In fact, the A's ran an advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday referring to their dominance in the series. It said: "The battle of the Bay is 100 percent baseball," but the word battle was crossed out and the ad continued by saying, "Well, when you've won eight of the last night it's not exactly a 'battle.'" |
Hooker leads quality 100 field with windy 10.76 Sat, 28 Jun 2008 01:32 EDT With one brilliant burst, Marshevet Hooker put her name alongside those of Florence Griffith-Joyner, Marion Jones and Evelyn Ashford. Hooker ran a wind-aided 10.76 seconds to win her 100-meter quarterfinal Friday at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, tying her with former world record-holder Ashford as the fifth-fastest woman in all conditions. "I heard the time first," said Hooker, an NCAA champion at Texas. "I was like, 'Wow!'" Then, though, she heard the wind speed: 3.4 meters per second, above the 2.0 that's allowed for a time to count as a personal best or official record. Still, only world-record holder Griffith-Joyner, Jones, Christine Arron and Merlene Ottey ever have run faster, regardless of wind. That impressed the other women in what's considered a talented field, with more than a half-dozen legitimate contenders for the three 100 berths on the Beijing Games roster.
Rookie Carpentier wins pole at New Hampshire Sat, 28 Jun 2008 01:08 EDT Rookie Patrick Carpentier grabbed his first NASCAR Sprint Cup pole Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Canadian driver, whose last pole came in a Champ Car in 2004 on the road course in Laguna Seca, Calif., was among the drivers who had to wait out a nearly two-hour rain delay before getting a shot at qualifying for Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 301. "It's amazing," said Carpentier, who took his first pole on an oval track with a fast lap was 129.776 mph. "The car was great. We made a couple of changes from this morning and the car just rotated beautifully through the middle of the corner. It was just stuck on the track. I'm real happy. "Honestly, if I had won the first pole on a road course I wouldn't be as happy," he added. "I want to do well on the ovals because that is where they do most the racing in this series." The rain began while series points leader Kyle Busch, the 24th driver in the 45-car qualifying line, was on the mile oval. He completed one lap that was good for 16th best at that point before officials called him in.
Royals beat Cardinals for sixth straight win Fri, 27 Jun 2008 23:32 EDT Alex Gordon drove in four runs with a homer and a bases-loaded double and Kansas City beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 on Friday night, the Royals' 11th win in 12 games. Gordon's solo shot off Joel Pineiro (2-4) put the Royals on top 5-0 in the fifth en route to their sixth straight win. David DeJesus had a two-run double off reliever Ron Villone as the Royals notched their longest win streak since opening the 2003 season 9-0. The Royals improved to 13-3 in interleague play, best in the majors. That's an impressive and unexpected mark for a team which lost 12 straight last month. The near-capacity crowd had Kauffman Stadium rocking as always when the state rivals from St. Louis are in town, with a big chunk of the 36,000 people wearing Cardinal red. Every time either team did something, half the stadium roared. Royals fans were even more energized than usual because of their unexpected hot streak, which includes a rare three-game sweep of the Cardinals last week in Busch Stadium. Gil Meche (6-8) went seven solid innings for his third straight win, giving up one run and six hits.
Sabathia, Sizemore lead Indians past Reds, 6-0 Fri, 27 Jun 2008 23:18 EDT C.C. Sabathia struck out 11 over eight strong innings, including his hero Ken Griffey Jr. three times, to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 on Friday night. Grady Sizemore hit his 18th homer, drove in three runs and made a spectacular catch as Cleveland won for the first time in four meetings with its intrastate rival this season. The Indians lead the all-time series 30-25, and have won 11 of the last 15 at Progressive Field. Sabathia (6-8) became the first Indians pitcher since Chuck Finley in 2000 to fan 10 or more in three consecutive starts. The reigning AL Cy Young winner retired 15 in a row between Norris Hopper's two-out single in the second and Jeff Keppinger's two-out single in the seventh. Sabathia gave up four singles and two walks, getting Griffey on a called third strike with two on to end the eighth. The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over his last four starts. In 13 starts since April 22, the left-hander is 6-5 with a 1.96 ERA, 104 strikeouts and 18 walks.
Severe storm in Omaha damages swimming arena Sat, 28 Jun 2008 01:27 EDT A severe storm packing strong wind damaged the Qwest Center and forced hundreds of swimmers practicing for the U.S. Olympic trials to evacuate the pools Friday. Officials at the 7-year-old arena near downtown Omaha closed the building for the rest of the night after the afternoon storm blew through to check the extent of the damage. Superstar Michael Phelps and hundreds of other swimmers were herded into the hallways of the arena after a tornado warning was issued. Across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa, police Sgt. Jason Bailey said two people died when a tree fell on the car they were in. Another person was injured, but not severely, he said. There was no structural damage to the Qwest Center. Repairs were under way and practices were to resume Saturday, according to USA Swimming spokeswoman Jamie Olsen. Arena televisions were tuned into local stations showing a swath of red, orange and yellow on the radar. Swimmers, coaches and meet workers milled about chatting. Some crowded close to an outside door with a narrow window that revealed the chaos outside - furious wind, rain and debris scattering through the parking lot.
Teixeira homers in Braves' 4-0 win over Jays Fri, 27 Jun 2008 23:12 EDT Bobby Cox has seen plenty of fine pitching performances as manager of the Atlanta Braves, but few as good as the one Jair Jurrjens delivered Friday night. Jurrjens worked eight innings, extending his scoreless innings streak to 21 2-3, and Mark Teixeira backed him with a homer and three RBIs as the Braves beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0. "He couldn't have pitched better than that," Cox said. "That's one of the best games I've seen pitched, ever." Jurrjens (8-3) allowed just three hits - all singles - and didn't allow a runner to reach second base. He turned it over to Mike Gonzalez for the ninth. "All of his other ones have been on the great side," Cox said. "This is on the excellent side. His location was just perfect."
Longoria, Hinske power Rays past Pirates, 10-5 Fri, 27 Jun 2008 22:47 EDT Evan Longoria and Eric Hinske hit three-run homers off the Pirates' Jimmy Barthmaier in his major league debut and the streaking Tampa Bay Rays quickly opened a seven-run lead in beating Pittsburgh 10-5 Friday night. In a matchup of two of the majors' worst teams over the last decade, the much-improved Rays showed the Pirates their blueprint for rebuilding, with plenty of fast-progressing hitters who can hit for power. The Rays are a franchise-best 17 games over .500 at 48-31 after winning four in a row, five of six and 10 of 13. Barthmaier (0-1), a former Astros prospect who began the season in Double-A, was called up because the Pirates are down two injured pitchers and are thin on minor league starting pitching prospects. His inexperience showed. The right-hander gave up seven runs and seven hits in 2 1-3 innings and was in trouble from the start. Carl Crawford singled and Hinske walked in the first ahead of Longoria's 15th homer, a drive to left-center that made it 3-0 only five batters into the game. In the third, Hinske hit a 3-1 pitch deep into the right-field seats with two on and none out for his 13th. Dioner Navarro added an RBI double later in the inning, making it 7-0. Longoria had four hits and scored three times, and Hinske and Crawford also scored three runs as the Rays' top five hitters combined for 13 of their 15 hits. Crawford hit a solo homer, his eighth, off reliever Sean Burnett in the sixth for his third hit.
Flanagan, Goucher, Begley qualify for Beijing Sat, 28 Jun 2008 01:22 EDT Shalane Flanagan, Kara Goucher and Amy Begley have earned spots on the U.S. Olympic team heading to Beijing by finishing in the top three in the women's 10,000 meters at the track and field trials. Flanagan, who broke the American record in the distance last month, won Friday night's final in 31 minutes, 34.81 seconds. That's a new record for Hayward Field, beating a mark established by Mary Decker in 1982. Goucher was second and Begley was third, less than 1 1/2 seconds inside the Olympic qualifying standard.
Rangers hold on to beat slumping Phillies, 8-7 Sat, 28 Jun 2008 00:42 EDT Milton Bradley hit the tiebreaking home run, Chris Davis homered in his first major league start and the Texas Rangers beat the slumping Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 on Friday night. Bradley, the American League's top hitter at .330, started for only the second time in nine games since sustaining a left quadriceps strain. His 16th homer, a solo shot off Clay Condrey (1-1), hit about halfway up the right-field pole in the fifth to snap a 6-6 tie. Pedro Feliz hit a grand slam for Philadelphia, whose lead in the National League East is down to one game over Florida after the Phillies' eighth loss in nine games. Ian Kinsler went 3-for-4 and scored three times, the last on Josh Hamilton's sacrifice fly in the eighth that proved vital. Kinsler led off the first with his 13th homer before adding two doubles, a walk and his 20th stolen base. C.J. Wilson worked the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances, after giving up a 437-foot homer to Jayson Werth on his first pitch. Josh Rupe (3-1) pitched 2 1-3 innings in relief.
Kerr gathering momentum for US Open defense Sat, 28 Jun 2008 05:27 EDT It looks as if Cristie Kerr has Angela Park right where she wants her. Just like last year at Pine Needles, Kerr trails Park heading into the weekend at the U.S. Women's Open. The margin is much slimmer this time, and Kerr is playing with the swagger of a defending major champion. Kerr made six birdies on her way to a 3-under 70 at Interlachen on Friday and she trails Park by just two strokes heading into the third round. "I've just got to take out of this that I'm in position again and I have that fire," Kerr said. "I've got it." Park shot 6-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Finland's Minea Blomqvist, In-Bee Park and Helen Alfredsson and again claim the Open lead after 36 holes. Last year at Pine Needles, Angela Park held a six-stroke lead over Kerr after two rounds, but fell off over the final 36 holes to finish in fifth.
Everybody back in the water at trials after storm Sat, 28 Jun 2008 05:14 EDT A severe storm that struck downtown Omaha and damaged the Qwest Center disrupted practice for the U.S. swimming trials. Repairs were made that allowed swimmers to get back into the water Saturday. Chunks of the building were ripped off and water poured down the steps at one end of the seating area, flooding the floor around the competition pool Friday. Superstar Michael Phelps and hundreds of swimmers were ordered out of the water and into interior hallways, cutting short their workouts. The building was later closed for the night to assess damage and make repairs in time for Sunday's start of the eight-day trials. There was no structural damage, although the arena lost insulation and sustained water damage, building spokeswoman Rebecca Kleeman said. "Really ominous, that's for sure," said two-time Olympian Erik Vendt, who, along with Phelps, was walking from their hotel to the arena when tornado sirens sounded.
NY prosecutors: Ref 'central' to NBA bet scandal Sat, 28 Jun 2008 05:12 EDT Disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy has exaggerated his cooperation in a gambling investigation in hopes of lessening his prison term and avoiding paying hefty restitution, prosecutors said in court papers filed Friday. He also has minimized his own role in the scheme, according to the filing in Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors rebuffed defense arguments that Donaghy should get a break on his sentence for voluntarily coming forward and giving prosecutors inside dirt about alleged game-fixing and other misconduct by other referees and league officials. In the court papers, prosecutors said that by the time Donaghy decided to cooperate last year, "the government had a clear understanding of the criminal conspiracy, and who was involved." Though he deserves credit for giving investigators information on his two co-defendants, his claims of other internal NBA corruption "did not lead to evidence of prosecutable federal offenses," the papers added. Defense attorney John Lauro declined comment Friday.
Bail set for man held in Raiders' Walker case Sat, 28 Jun 2008 05:12 EDT A man charged with kidnapping, beating and robbing Javon Walker this month after the Oakland wide receiver spent a night club-hopping was held Friday on bail totaling $86,000. Arfat Fadel's lawyer, public defender Shane Emerick, said outside court he doubted Fadel could make bail. Emerick said Fadel intended to plead not guilty to charges that he and an unidentified second man followed Walker from club to club before enticing him into their vehicle and robbing him. Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo set bail at $73,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for July 16 on four felony charges: first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and battery causing substantial bodily harm. A kidnapping conviction carries a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. The 30-year-old Fadel, of Las Vegas, told another judge Wednesday that he couldn't raise $13,000 bail in a separate kidnapping and domestic battery case. Las Vegas police say Fadel has not cooperated with investigators who are seeking another man shown in surveillance videotapes with Fadel shadowing Walker at nightclubs late June 15.
China's Zheng takes down Ivanovic at Wimbledon Sat, 28 Jun 2008 02:31 EDT WIMBLEDON, England . They're still counting casualties back home, and so when Zheng Jie completed the biggest victory of her career Friday at Wimbledon, she resisted any temptation to leap or squeal or collapse in glee. Instead she merely cracked a slight smile, hoping her family, friends and fans in China could do the same. The 133rd-ranked Zheng beat new No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 6-4. It was the latest in a series of first-week upsets and one that was easy to applaud because Zheng is a native of Chengdu, the capital of earthquake-stricken Sichuan province. .Of course I hope to make people happy with my win,. Zheng said. .I want more people to have their homes, be fine and happy..
