| A Franklin finale Tue, 10 Jun 2008 10:47:29 -0500 FRANKLIN — Kelleshia Cook has made a lot of fond memories for herself in the Franklin-Simpson gymnasium over the past six years. But the one she made Monday might have been one of the most rewarding. Cook played her final high school game at Franklin-Simpson High School on Monday as a member of the 2008 Kentucky Girls’ All-Star team. Cook and her fellow senior all-stars knocked off the Kentucky junior all-star squad, 93-39, as a tune-up for this weekend’s annual Anthem Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game. And just being able to come home and be recognized as one of the best players in the state is something that has left Cook with few words. “I’m really speechless,” said Cook, who started for the seniors and tallied 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals. “It’s just big, and just to be on the team is big. “And being able to play a lot here is just great.” Cook and the senior all-stars will start the annual two-game series with the Indiana all-stars on Friday in Indianapolis and then again on Sunday in Louisville. And while the team has only had five official practices, Cook said things are starting to gel together with the highly talented group, and she expects the squad to be ready come Friday. “This has been great, these are a bunch of great players who are just really fun to be around,” Cook said. “We’re coming together pretty good, we’ve known each other for a little while and we know how our chemistry is and we’re just trying to win Friday. “Friday’s a really big game, and it’s very important for us to win.” All-star coach Sally Zimmerman of Shelby County said Cook has enjoyed being around Cook over this short stint, and said she was actually quite surprised at how good she really is. “The girl deserves any honor she can get,” Zimmerman said. “She had a great high school career and obviously ended it well and is just a great kid. “Kelleshia’s showing me a whole lot more than I’ve seen at any other time I’ve seen her play. She can play defense, she can knock down the open shot - she’s the complete package and that’s why she’s on the team.” Overall, Zimmerman said she was pleased with how the girls played in spite of only having so few practices together, but she knows the group has the difficult task of having a lot of work left in a short time. “We’re coming together in scrimmage-type situations, but we’ve got a long way to go to beat Indiana,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve got to get better on defense and rebound better, the strong point of this team should be rebounding and it really wasn’t tonight. “They’re gelling together, they know their roles and I think we’re all on the same page and that’s a big key.” The seniors were led by the 2008 Kentucky Miss Basketball, Butler’s Tia Gibbs. The Vanderbilt signee finished with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Former Owensboro star and future Louisville Lady Cardinal Janae Howard added 14 points and six rebounds, while former DuPont Manual star Brittany Wilson added 10 points and six rebounds. The junior squad was led by both Paducah-Tilghman’s Natalie Shumpert and Iroquois’ Adia Mathies - each tallied seven points. Three local juniors also played Monday, Franklin-Simpson’s Brittany Payne (two points, two rebounds) and Dominique Cook (one rebound, one assist) as well as Allen County-Scottsville’s Shelby Harper (two points, three rebounds). The team will have one more organized scrimmage Wednesday at Montgomery County High School before heading to Indiana for Friday’s game, and Zimmerman said she hopes the actual simulation of real games will go a long way in preparing them. “These two scrimmages will hopefully prepare us more than anything and that will be key because with the new format, you play Friday and have to turn around and play the next night,” she said. “So we’ll have to have a good practice tomorrow, work out the kinks and be ready for Wednesday. “Right now they’re doing everything right, but it really doesn’t matter unless you do it against Indiana - and we want to sweep them, that’s our goal.” |
| Former Topper WR Hamilton waived by Bears Tue, 10 Jun 2008 10:47:30 -0500 Former Western Kentucky wide receiver Curtis Hamilton was released Friday by the Chicago Bears. Hamilton, who finished his career at WKU as the all-time career leader in receiving yardage as well as receptions, was signed by the Bears as an undrafted rookie free agent after the National Football League Draft in April. Hamilton’s agent, Nate Haber, said the decision was basically due to what he dubbed as a “numbers game.” “It was just one of those situations where they had a numbers game there and that was basically it,” Haber said. Haber said Hamilton is currently in the process of clearing waivers - something that normally takes upward of a week to do - and once he does that, he’ll be free to be claimed or sign with another team. “We’re just waiting for him to clear waivers, typically it’ll take four to seven days at this point and this will be about his fourth or fifth day right now,” Haber said. “That’s really something we’ll have to wait for, anyone can claim him. “It’s really up to a team at this point, and whoever claims him - God willing it will be somebody - he’ll go to that team.” |
