| Gators in title hunt Wed, 30 Apr 2008 11:01:58 -0500 The Greenwood baseball team moved one step closer to a District 14 championship with an 8-3 win at Warren East on Tuesday. Greenwood pounded out 13 hits and got a solid start from Brandon Miller to improve to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in District 14. “They’re not giving out trophies for regular season championships, but we are pleased to be 3-1 and playing well right now,” Greenwood coach Chris Decker said. “I’m proud of the effort tonight.” With a win against Bowling Green on Friday, the Gators will claim at least a share of the district championship, but clinch the No. 1 seed in the district tournament. It’s a far cry from one year ago, when Greenwood went winless in district play. “It feels good, especially since last year we didn’t do too good in the district,” said Greenwood first baseman Ricky Adams, who went 4-for-4 Tuesday. “So far we are doing great. Our pitchers are doing great for us. It feels good.” Adams got the scoring going with a two-out, two-run single in the first. Greenwood added a pair of runs in the second, making the score 4-0. Warren East (9-13, 1-4) answered in the bottom of the third. The Raiders took advantage of three Greenwood errors, scoring twice and shaving the deficit to 4-2. The Raiders whittled the lead to 4-3 on a fielder’s choice by Andrew Alvey in the fourth inning, but Miller struck out Landon White to end the threat. Greenwood pulled away in the top of the fifth, sending eight men to the plate. Hunter Thompson had an RBI single and Dillon Graham delivered a two-run single that gave the Gators a 7-3 lead. “It was pretty important to get those runs, especially after we had a few errors in the field,” Adams said. “It calmed us down.” Warren East coach Wes Sanford said that was the turning point in the game. “Once they had that three-run inning, we shut down ourselves,” Sanford said. “We lost anything we had, any energy we had. That took the wind out of our sails.” Greenwood added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Graham, who finished with three hits and four RBIs. That was more than enough for Miller, who went the distance. The right-hander gave up one earned run and six hits, but only allowed one infield hit after the fourth inning. “He definitely got stronger as the game went on,” Decker said. “Of course it helps to pitch with a four run lead with an inning or two to go.” Warren East used five pitchers, but were unable to contain the Gators’ offense. “We weren’t really sharp on the mound, but they are a really good hitting team,” Sanford said. “Those guys can swing it pretty well. I don’t know if they are tops in the district, but they are one of the best around here at swinging it.” Offensively, White led the Raiders with two hits and a run scored. Greenwood returns to action at 5 p.m. tonight when it plays at Franklin-Simpson. Warren East will play at Edmonson County at 4:30 p.m. Friday GHS 220 030 1 - 8 13 3 WEHS 002 100 0 - 3 6 1 WP: Miller; LP: Lamastus |
| Active offense helps Lady Cats slip past Warren Central, 6-5 Wed, 30 Apr 2008 11:02:00 -0500 Edmonson County coach Kevin Jackson has a theory about how to win games: Just put the ball in play and good things will happen. That’s exactly what the Lady Cats did Tuesday, slapping seven hits and stealing six bases to hold on for a 6-5 win over host Warren Central. “Well, you saw a contrast in styles,” Jackson said. “Central, give them credit, can hit the ball hard and hit home runs where our game is to put the ball in play and play a short game and run the bases. “And I was so proud of our kids today, we came here last year with a very good team and only scored two runs and won 2-0, and today we came down and got six off the same pitcher.” Edmonson County put the ball in play early and often, and it paid off as the Lady Cats took advantage of two Lady Dragon errors in the top of the first to stake a 2-0 lead. After Edmonson County added another run in the second, Warren Central responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run from Monica Ledbetter to cut the lead to 3-2. But the Lady Cats answered in the next half inning as an Allie Newton groundout scored Betsy Buttram - who tripled earlier in the inning - before Hannah Ruth Clemmons drove home Lindsey Moorhead with an RBI single. Edmonson County added another run in the top of the fifth, but Central wouldn’t go away - getting an RBI double from Kyrstin Corder and an RBI single from Mikayla Love in the bottom half of the frame to make it 6-4. Corder scored again in the bottom of the seventh with two outs on a double steal to bring the Lady Dragons within one, but Jackson then called a meeting at the mound. That seemed to settle his squad before pitcher Alissa Thomas forced her Lady Dragon counterpart Sarah Stanfield into a game-ending groundout. “Our goal today with our pitching was to not issue walks, because when a team can hit home runs you don’t want to have people on in front of them,” Jackson said. “And (Thomas) did a good job today, I think she might have had one walk.” Thomas said her main goal was to simply keep the team in the ballgame for as long as she could. She added that the Lady Cats’ aggressive offense helped greatly. “Right now we’re just working to try and get through the rough parts as a team and just forget any errors and move on and succeed as a team,” Thomas said. “We’ve lost our best pitcher to complications, and I just tried to go out there and try and do my best and try to throw and keep us in it.” Warren Central coach Glenn Woodard said the difference was his team’s inability to come out of the gates with intensity, saying the group needs to understand it has turf to defend. “We didn’t come out ready to play, and that’s that recurring problem that we have,” Woodard said. “I told them just a minute ago, we have to claim the game as ours … and this is home for us, and when we come on the field this is our house, and we need to make people show up and play to beat us. “And until we get that winning attitude and come out and play that way we’ll (struggle). But give them credit, they came out and slapped bunts, were aggressive and ran. But it’s disappointing because obviously that game could have been ours.” Thomas allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out five over seven innings to earn the win for Edmonson County (12-6). Buttram finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI for the Lady Cats, while Jordan Simon went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run scored. Stanfield took the loss for the Lady Dragons (6-11), allowing six runs on seven hits while fanning two over seven innings. Ledbetter finished 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Addie Dodson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jackson said he continues to be impressed with his youthful group’s effort, saying that they’ve done a fine job of brushing off the loss of a solid senior class from a year ago. “We lost five very good seniors last year, and at a small school that’s hard to overcome sometimes,” Jackson said. “So we started a seventh-grader and two or three freshmen today and we’re just tickled to death with the progress they’re making.” ECHS 210 210 0 — 6 7 2 WCHS 002 020 1 — 5 8 3 WP: Thomas; LP: Stanfield. |
| Warren East hitters lead rally past Lady Scotties Wed, 30 Apr 2008 11:02:01 -0500 The Warren East softball bats found some juice just in time. East rallied for a 3-2 victory over visiting Glasgow on Tuesday with a pair of sixth-inning runs, thanks to the top of its lineup. Sara Coulter’s one-out triple to right field scored leadoff hitter Amy Barnett and Natalie Duncan’s double off the center field fence knocked in Coulter for the eventual game-winning run. “We were pretty quiet until then,” Coulter said. “But all I was thinking was we needed a hit and to just let the game come to us.” The Coulter-Barnett-Duncan trio combined for five of East’s six hits, but the Lady Raiders mustered few scoring chances against Glasgow until the sixth inning. Coulter’s two-out double in the third inning scored Lauren Threadgill for East’s only other run. Before its sixth-inning rally, Glasgow pitcher Blair Dennison had retired six in a row. “We needed something,” East coach Phil Burkeen said. “We got to that top of the order and came through with some clutch hits. I was confident, but with the way our season has gone and the losses mount, there was some doubt.” The Lady Raiders had lost three of their last four entering Tuesday and escaped a dicey seventh inning for the victory. Glasgow’s Kelsey Bowles led off the seventh with a double, but the Lady Scotties stranded the tying run at third. “We competed well with them, we just didn’t come up with the big hit today,” Glasgow coach Steven Murphy said. “We had a few chances there, but couldn’t get the big hit.” The biggest out in the inning came on Shelby Ray’s debatable check-swing strikeout with one out in the inning. Ray had a pair of doubles and a single in her first three at-bats, but struck out after an appeal to the base umpire standing behind the pitcher’s mound. “That’s not what cost us the ballgame at all - we just didn’t score enough runs,” Murphy said. “(The umpire is) in position where he’s supposed to be, but I just didn’t feel he’s in a position where he can make that call. But you win some, you lose some and it just didn’t go our way.” Ray - only an eighth-grader - scored both of Glasgow’s runs. Her run off of Micha Elmore’s single in the fifth inning gave Glasgow a 2-1 lead. “I died when I found out she’s an eighth-grader,” Burkeen said. “She’s one of the best hitters we faced. She takes good swings. We thought about walking her (in the seventh inning) but I did not want to put the go-ahead run on base.” East’s Laura Creek picked up the win in relief for Kate Holmes. Creek went three innings, gave up three hits and struck out two. Holmes gave up four hits and struck out six over four innings. East (8-15) returns to action Friday when it hosts the Warren East Invitational. Glasgow (11-12) hosts Allen County-Scottsville on Thursday. | Six homebreds vying to extend Derby-winning trend Tue, 29 Apr 2008 23:22 EDT Over the last couple of decades in the thoroughbred industry, the public auction arena has steadily overtaken tradition-rich breeding operations as the premier choice for owners seeking horse racing's next superstar. But thanks to a recent trend on racing's grandest stage, homebred horses might find themselves in the midst of a resurgence.Money can buy a lot of things but, in the last several years, a Kentucky Derby winner hasn't been one of them. Since 2004, homebred horses have dominated the 11/4-mile test, with Smarty Jones, Giacomo, Barbaro, and Street Sense all sweeping home to claim the roses. Before the current run of four straight winners, no homebred had taken the Derby since Grindstone in 1996. Their current reign stands a good chance of continuing this year as six Derby contenders -- Adriano, Colonel John, Cowboy Cal, Pyro, Smooth Air and Tale of Ekati -- are cut from the owner-breeder cloth. While few are suggesting the commercial marketplace will become any less popular, some say the current streak might make some in the breed-to-sell business readjust their mentality. |

This is something that we're trying to keep going."Also, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns 92-87 to win that series in five games; the Houston Rockets beat Utah 95-69 to cut the Jazz's lead to 3-2; and the Detroit Pistons took a 3-2 lead over the Philadelphia 76ers with a 98-81 rout. |
| Norstrom scores in OT to give Stars 3-0 lead over Sharks Wed, 30 Apr 2008 04:21 EDT Thanks to an unlikely goal from Mattias Norstrom, the Dallas Stars are one victory shy of the Western Conference finals.Norstrom scored from the top of the left circle 4:37 into overtime Tuesday night to give the Stars a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks and a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov had already made several impressive saves in the overtime, denying Loui Eriksson twice in the first couple of minutes. The second shot by Eriksson came as he tried to knock in the rebound of Brad Richards' shot that the goalie kicked away. But Nabokov had too many bodies around him and couldn't see the shot by Norstrom, who scored his second goal in 47 playoff games. He took a pass from Mike Ribeiro and slapped it through the traffic and into the net.The last time the Stars had a 3-0 series lead was in the first round of the 1999 playoffs, when they swept Edmonton and went on to win the Stanley Cup. This is their 16th postseason series since then. |
| Spurs beat Suns 92-87 to win first-round series 4-1 Wed, 30 Apr 2008 04:12 EDT Tony Parker scored 31 points, Tim Duncan added 29 points and 17 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs advanced to the Western Conference semifinals with a 92-87 Game 5 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. The third-seeded Spurs will meet the No. 2 seed Hornets in a second-round series that begins Saturday at New Orleans. The Hornets finished off their series with the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, also in five games.Boris Diaw, who had a near triple-double in the Suns' rout of the Spurs in Game 4, led the Suns with 22 points.Four other players scored in the double digits, but the Suns had a number of costly turnovers down the stretch and were sent home yet again by the Spurs, who have eliminated Phoenix in four of their last five playoff appearances. With the Spurs up 88-87 after battling back and forth with the Suns throughout the fourth quarter, Manu Ginobili, who had been cold all night, hit one of two from the line with 25 seconds on the clock. |
| Geoff Blum's 3-run double leads Astros to 6-4 win Wed, 30 Apr 2008 02:37 EDT Geoff Blum doubled in three runs and the Houston Astros handed the Arizona Diamondbacks only their third home loss in 13 games his season, 6-4 on Tuesday night.Hard-throwing Max Scherzer, Arizona's 2006 first-round draft pick out of the University of Missouri, made an impressive major league debut, to say the least, in relief of Diamondbacks starter Edgar Gonzalez.Scherzer retired all 13 batters he faced, seven by strikeout, with a fastball that reached 98 mph on the Chase Field radar gun. It was the most strikeouts ever by an Arizona pitcher in his first big-league game.Jose Valverde, who led the majors with 47 saves for Arizona last year and was traded to Houston in the offseason, pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in seven opportunities. The Astros ended Gonzalez's night with a four-run third inning that put Houston up 6-2. Blum drove in three with a bases-clearing double, then scored on J.R. Towles' double to left that replays showed should have been ruled a home run. |

He was put on the DL for the first time since July 2000 with Seattle, when he had a strained right knee. This is Rodriguez's fifth career trip to the disabled list."If it's a Grade 2, it's going to be at least the two weeks. That's why we're doing it," general manager Brian Cashman said. |
| Wright's bases-loaded single in 11th lifts Mets over Pirates Wed, 30 Apr 2008 00:22 EDT David Wright hit a single over a pulled in outfield with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, giving New York a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night after the Mets' bullpen wasted a two-hit performance by Johan Santana.Endy Chavez singled off John Van Benschoten (0-1), Pittsburgh's sixth pitcher, leading off the 11th. Van Benschoten, called up Sunday when Matt Morris was released, balked to move Chavez to second. Marlon Anderson sacrificed, and after Jose Reyes was walked intentionally - he reached in all six plate appearances - Luis Castillo walked.Wright then hit a fly that just barely landed inside the right-field line, causing a delayed reaction from the players and fans.Jorge Sosa (3-1), the Mets' seventh pitcher, worked one inning for the win.The Pirates tied it in the ninth against Billy Wagner with an assist from Reyes' throwing error. It was Wagner's first blown save of the season - his first run, too, albeit unearned. |

Winning Colors was the most recent, winning in 1988.Trainer Larry Jones said Eight Belles would run in Friday's Kentucky Oaks if she drew an outside post in the Derby. That won't happen now. |

Only two teams have come back to win a series after trailing 3-0. The 1975 New York Islanders did it to the Penguins in the second round. |

But it's no guarantee - Houston was the first team to beat Utah in Salt Lake City during the regular season and won Game 3 there last Thursday. The Rockets did everything they hadn't done for most of the series. They shot well, hit their free throws and got valuable production off the bench.Houston came into the game with the lowest scoring average of any playoff team (85.5) and was shooting only 39.9 percent from the field and 65.7 percent from the free throw line in the series. In Game 5, the Rockets shot 47 percent (37-of-79), went 15-of-19 from the line and outscored Utah's bench 26-9. |
| Pavel Datsyuk leads Red Wings to 4-3 win over Avs Wed, 30 Apr 2008 02:37 EDT The usually heated Colorado-Detroit matchup has never been this one-sided, on the scoreboard or in the trainer's room.Pavel Datsyuk scored twice and Johan Franzen picked up his sixth goal of the series, putting the Red Wings on the cusp of the Western Conference finals with a 4-3 victory Tuesday night over the ailing Avalanche, who lost another star skater when leading scorer Paul Stastny went down with a knee injury in the first period. The Red Wings can wrap up the series with a win in Game 4 on Thursday night at the Pepsi Center. None of the five previous playoff series between the archrivals ever ended in a sweep. The Avs have lost all seven times they played Detroit this season, including three shutouts in the regular season. To advance to the conference finals, they'll have to become the first team in 33 years to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs. And they sure don't look like a team ready to make a historic run to join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders as the only NHL teams ever to win a series after losing the first three games. |
