Central rolls past GHS Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:55 -0500 Throughout her time in the Warren Central softball program, Addie Dodson has demonstrated an ability to hit the ball. But lately, Dodson has been proving another ability on the diamond - her pitching prowess. Dodson, subbing for injured Lady Dragon starter Sarah Stanfield, threw a complete-game five-hitter Saturday as Warren Central blasted visiting Glasgow, 11-4. “I’m feeling pretty good, I’m pitching a lot more so it’s getting better,” said Dodson, who has filled in for the past few games as Stanfield recovers from a leg injury. “It’s kind of tough when you just get thrown in there, but I’ve been pitching more now and overall I’m feeling pretty good.” Dodson’s powerful bat also helped her cause, as she finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. “I think now it’s about her fourth start and she’s starting to feel comfortable in that position,” Warren Central coach Glenn Woodard said. “When you lose a starter, someone has to step up in that position and then you see what your team is made of. “And obviously we’re starting to back her very well, and we have confidence in her and it’s showing.” With Glasgow holding a three-run advantage heading into the bottom of the third, the Warren Central bats began to heat up. The Lady Dragons crossed five runners to grab a 6-3 lead. Dodson delivered an RBI double to score Casey Lloyd - who singled one batter earlier - to get things started. Krystin Corder then reached on an error, which allowed Dodson to score. Two hitters later, Kelsey Beech brought home both Corder and Mikayla Love - who drew a walk - with a two-RBI double before Love was brought in a batter later by a Mason Donisi single. The Lady Dragons added two more in the fourth and another three in the sixth - both with solid hitting and the ability to take advantage of several Glasgow errors. The Lady Scotties, who were missing several seniors due to a senior trip, committed eight errors on the afternoon. “It’s pretty exciting, the last few games we just didn’t have everything on the same page so this is big,” Woodard said. “The defense is working well and the bats are starting to come around, and that’s what we’re working on because the District (14 Tournament) is coming around and that’s the most important thing. “And obviously we’re going to have Greenwood in the first round and we’ll have to have everything clicking then.” Glasgow coach Steven Murphy said the most important thing his team can do after its performance Saturday is to learn from it. “There were probably four or five makable plays that weren’t errors that we didn’t make a play on, and we try not to make excuses but we just have to make those plays,” Murphy said. “We told them that from now on we need to make those plays and bounce right back on Monday. “We can’t mope around and dwell on it, we’ve got to bounce back - that’s the key thing, how we bounce back.” Blair Dennison went the distance and took the loss for Glasgow (11-10), while Morgan Smith led the way offensively going 1-for-3 with a solo home run. For Central (6-10) offensively, Corder finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Lloyd added two singles and two runs scored as well. With one final regular season district game left against Warren East on Monday, Dodson said she hopes that the offensive outburst - along with the nearing return of the team’s ace pitcher - will provide a boost for Central, as the Lady Dragons will have their hands full come tournament time. “It’s a real confidence booster,” she said. “We’ve got East on Monday so hopefully we can take this and build off of this and do something with it.” GHS 300 000 1 — 4 5 8 WCHS 105 203 X — 11 11 3 WP: Dodson; LP: Dennison.

WKU Briefs: Western Kentucky evens series at Florida Atlantic Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:55 -0500 At Boca Raton, Fla., the Western Kentucky baseball team pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs as it evened its weekend series against Florida Atlantic with an 11-5 win over the Owls on Saturday afternoon at FAU Stadium. The win ended a two-game skid for the Toppers as they improved to 24-18 and 11-9 in the Sun Belt Conference. FAU fell to 24-17 and 11-7 in the league. With the score at 2-1 FAU, Scott Kaskie reached on an error to start the third, a Wade Gaynor double scored him all the way from first to tie the game at 2-2. Chad Cregar followed with his second home run in as many days - and 17th of the season - to put WKU in front 4-2. WKU loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before FAU reliever Mike Gipson walked Gaynor to force home Jeremy Coleman. That would be the RBI of the inning for the Toppers, but another run scored on a Gipson wild pitch, and Kaskie came home when Terrence Dayleg reached on another Florida Atlantic error to put WKU in front 7-2. Matt Payton - who had not homered in the first 286 bats of his collegiate career - hit a long ball for the second straight day as his two-run shot over the wall in right stretched the Hilltopper advantage to 9-2. After throwing six innings and allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts, starter Matt Ridings (8-2) gave way to the Hilltopper bullpen for the final three innings. Offensively, Cregar finished with a game-high three hits, while Matt Rice, Jeremy Coleman and Payton each finished with two hits. Payton also drove in a team-high three runs. Travis Ozga finished with three hits to lead the Owls. The teams will play the rubber match of the series at noon today. WKU softball earns sweep On a day when the Western Kentucky softball team honored its lone senior, Shelby Smith, the Hilltoppers responded with a doubleheader sweep of Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama on Saturday at the WKU Softball Complex. WKU won game one 8-2 and followed with a 7-5 victory in the second contest. The Hilltoppers (22-26, 6-13 SBC) brought the bats to the yard on Saturday as WKU hit three home runs that accounted for seven runs over the two games, including two blasts that led to six runs in game one. The Toppers loaded the bases in the third inning on two walks and a single by Rachelle Boucher before Lindsay Antone cranked her 12th home run on the season in grand-slam fashion over the centerfield wall and into the parking lot. The homer tied the single-season record held by Jessie Richardson. Then an inning later Boucher nailed a two-run shot over the center field wall that scored Terri Ellingsworth, after she singled. Evelyne Pare reached first base on an error to start the fourth inning and then scored on the Jaguars first hit of the contest, a double to left center by Courtney Chigaros to cut the gap to 4-1. Ryan Rogge (13-13) pitched a complete game - her 12th of the year - while allowing just three hits, two unearned runs and striking out seven batters. Boucher finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and three runs. Beth Pilgrim (10-13) took the loss after allowing six runs over five innings. The Toppers batted around in the second inning of game two and before the damage was done, WKU had built a 6-0 lead. Antone singled up the middle to score Elizabeth Ferrell and Boucher and then Shelby Smith followed with a RBI single to score Antone. USA (21-28, 5-15 SBC) got right back into the game in the fifth after scoring three runs. A sacrifice fly by Amanda Hudson scored a run and a single from Tara Donaldson scored another run for the Jaguars to cut the lead to 7-4. Ashley Contreras then hit her second blast on the year with a solo shot to right center in the third. Jennifer Kempf (9-11) grabbed the win in six innings of work while striking out three. The first seven hitters in the lineup each tallied a hit. Both teams finish the three-game set with a single game at 1 p.m. today.

Outdoors: BG anglers make winning decision Sat, 26 Apr 2008 21:51:56 -0500 “Strategy-wise, we don’t mess around, we make a decision and go.” Last Saturday, Bowling Green anglers Mike Tinsley and Tim Gill developed a winning strategy for the Crappie USA Tournament on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. Choosing to begin their morning 20 miles from the weigh-in station and fishing their way back, the experienced duo knew their chances of taking home the top prize were better than average. “We had finished second down there last year and had a good feeling about it,” Mike said. However, the fishing did not start on the best note. After trying straight minnows for two hours and not even bringing a slab into the boat, “Tim decided to tie on a red and chartreuse jig and within 30 seconds he had a fish,” Mike explained. “Then he dropped it back down and not even a minute later caught the 2.11-pounder.” The team’s second fish was enough to snatch second place for the big crappie of the day, only falling seven-hundredths of a pound behind the heaviest fish. With their momentum building, the men continued to reel in lunkers. “We were fishing ledges that had stumps on them using Southern Pro umbrella tubes,” Mike said. “It is really hard to win one of these tournaments. It’s just like winning one of those big bass tournaments; you’ve gotta have a little luck on your side and find some fish.” While some folks might not even have known that crappie tournaments exist, Mike and Tim compare them to the largemouth circuits popularized on television. “You’ve got the best crappie fishermen in the world fishing these tournaments, just like on the bass circuit, except it is for crappie,” Mike said. Additionally, most keeper fish have to exceed well over one pound to be in the running. As the day wore on, Tim and Mike’s livewell began to swell with some fine specimen. “The seven that you weigh in have to be put back into the lake alive, but you can catch more to take home if you want,” Mike said. Experience and luck were certainly on the men’s side, when at the end of the tournament they posted a whopping seven-fish limit totaling 11.2 pounds; enough weight to clinch the tournament victory, with the closest competitor a half-pound shy of their tally. The win qualified Mike and Tim for the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic on Patoka Lake in October, but they don’t plan on waiting that long before bringing home another cardboard check. “We’ve got a regional next weekend in Grenada, Miss., and then May 17 we go to Kentucky Lake for a Crappie Master’s tournament,” Mike said. “If we had more sponsors we’d fish a tournament every weekend.” It is a wish that may soon become a reality if the Bowling Green men keep up their crappie streak. More about their win and other events can be found at www.crappieusa.com.

Cats get new threads for new season Sun, 27 Apr 2008 02:07 EDT The first thing you might recognize about the 2008 University of Kentucky football team is the fact that Andre Woodson, Keenan Burton, Jacob Tamme, Wesley Woodyard and Rafael Little are no longer in uniform. But that's not the only way the Wildcats will look different next fall, as UK will break out new uniforms for the 2008 season.UK didn't have prints of the new uni's available for the public, but they aren't a drastic change from the most recent model which made their debut in the 2004 season. The lettering and numeral design will remain the same, with the most notable differences coming on the sides. The big stripe down the side of the jersey and pants has been replaced with a smaller, more traditional set of diagonal stripes around the rib cage area. The new uniforms will also feature more black trim, particularly around the sleeve and collar areas. Since the big stripe going down the pants has been eliminated, UK will also be able to mix combinations. For example, the Cats could wear the white jerseys with blue pants or blue jerseys with white pants. The helmets will remain the same.Representatives from Nike meet with coaches across the country several times a year to discuss equipment and apparel, and UK Coach Rich Brooks played a big part in the new design.

Another Kentucky gem polishes Pearl Sun, 27 Apr 2008 08:51 EDT When he signed with Tennessee last week, Kentuckian Scotty Hopson marked the first McDonald's All-America recruit for Vols Coach Bruce Pearl."This is a big one," Pearl told the Knoxville News Sentinel after Hopson signed. "It breaks a door down for me, my first McDonald's All-American, a guy with a lot of visibility."Of course, Pearl has done wonders without the benefit of a marquee recruit. He's elevated UT from a basketball backwater into a top 25 program. Hopson could be for Tennessee what Mike Miller was for Billy Donovan and Florida in the late 1990s: a prospect who signals a new national contender.Hopson, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard for University Heights, joins 6-11 center Philip Jurick, 6-1 point guard Daniel West and 6-8 wing Renaldo Woolridge. The latter is the son of former Notre Dame and NBA player Orlando Woolridge.Rivals.com rated Hopson at No. 5 in the Class of 2008. Woolridge is No. 53 and Jurick is No. 68.
UK baseball: Cats even series with Vandy Sat, 26 Apr 2008 23:56 EDT Every member of the UK starting lineup got a hit Saturday as the Cats exploded for 13 hits in a series-evening 6-2 win over Vanderbilt at Charles Hawkins Field.Collin Cowgill, Ryan Wilkes, Chris Wade and Keenan Wiley all had two-hit days for the Cats. Wilkes finished with a double and a triple, driving in a team-best two runs.Making his second Southeastern Conference start, sophomore southpaw James Paxton was solid through 41/3 innings, allowing four hits and one run, walking two and striking out one. UK got an excellent outing from its bullpen as seniors Aaron Lovett and Andrew Albers closed out the game. Lovett got the win (3-2), tossing two innings, allowing two hits, one run, walking two and striking out one. Albers got his first save of the season, working the final 22/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.Kentucky (32-11, 10-10 SEC) won despite stranding a season-high 16 runners on base. UK got on the board with a three run, two-hit third inning. After Bryan Rose led off with a hard flyout to left field, Cowgill was hit by a pitch. Sawyer Carroll drew a full-count walk and Chris McClendon scored Cowgill with a single to left field, with both runners moving up a base after a botched throw. Wilkes notched his first triple of the year, a hard liner into the right-center field gap to score Carroll and McClendon.

Kyle Busch gets 2nd Sprint win under caution at Talladega Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:34 EDT Kyle Busch fell a lap down midway through the race, and after racing his way back into contention, needed an awesome save to keep himself from triggering a massive crash. "Typical Talladega," he thought.Only this time, the crash happened behind Busch. Instead of leaving Talladega Superspeedway with a smashed-up car, he drove into Victory Lane. The kid who couldn't conquer Talladega finally won at the harrowing track Sunday, and in this breakout season for Busch, it was only fitting that he coasted to the victory."I'd like to say that I'm smarter than I look, but that's certainly not the case," Busch said. "Today was just due to having a great car. Getting a lap down, that was like, 'Oh, typical Talladega' there. But I didn't wreck today and I was definitely happy of that, and I was greatly appreciative that I was able to win today because it's certainly been a struggle for several years."I don't think I've ever finished one here yet without some sort of damage. We still had damage, but it wasn't enough to keep us from Victory Lane."Busch came back from a lap down, then survived a near wreck with Jamie McMurray for his first win at Talladega. It was won under caution when a 12-car accident brought out the yellow flag on the final lap, freezing the field and allowing Busch to slowly make his way across the finish line - a rare completion considering his history at the track.
Loney's single in 10th hands Dodgers 3-2 win over Rockies Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:14 EDT James Loney singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the NL champion Colorado Rockies with a 3-2 victory on Sunday. It's the first three-game winning streak of the season for the Dodgers under new manager Joe Torre, who used his 24th different lineup in 25 games as he continues to search for a consistent combination after making the playoffs in each of the last 12 seasons with the New York Yankees.Los Angeles has had six different managers since winning the 1988 World Series under Tommy Lasorda, and has won only one postseason game since then.It was the fifth extra-inning game this season for the Rockies, including a 22-inning win at San Diego on April 17 and a 13-inning loss to the Dodgers on Friday night. The Rockies' pitching staff on Monday night will break the franchise record for most innings worked in April. The 1998 staff threw 240 in the month.Manny Corpas (0-2), working his second inning of relief, walked Rafael Furcal and pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney to open the 10th. Both runners advanced on Matt Kemp's sacrifice bunt, and Loney grounded a 1-0 pitch through the right side of the infield to end it.
Altidore leads N.Y. over San Jose Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:09 EDT The San Jose Earthquakes did an excellent job shutting down New York Red Bulls star forward Jozy Altidore for the majority of Sunday's Major League Soccer contest at Giants Stadium."I think they tried to frustrate him and they were doing a good job at it," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.Unfortunately for the expansion club, the 18-year-old had an opportunity late in the second half and used it to draw a penalty kick, which Mike Magee buried for the game winner in a 2-0 Red Bulls victory."It was very fresh to see that open up and (John) Wolyneic played a superb ball to space and I went at the guy," Altidore said. "Luckily for me he made a mistake we got the PK and got our first goal of the game."Altidore added another goal five minutes into stoppage time to seal the victory, New York's second of the season.
Braves' Smoltz complains of discomfort in throwing shoulder Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:04 EDT John Smoltz left Atlanta's 6-3 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday with what he called "discomfort" in his throwing shoulder. The Braves right-hander allowed four runs and seven hits in a season-low four innings. He also gave up his first two home runs of the season.Smoltz (3-2) came in having allowed just two runs in his first four starts, for a 0.78 ERA.Smoltz said the discomfort prevented him from delivering pitches the way he wanted. He was vague about what will happen next."The next couple of days I should know what paths we're looking at," Smoltz said.
Sivtsov wins Tour de Georgia in first US race Sun, 27 Apr 2008 19:59 EDT Kanstantin Sivtsov kept his tires full Sunday. The rest was easy.Sivtsov, competing in his first race in the United States, survived a rash of flat tires on the streets of Atlanta to win the Tour de Georgia.Sivtsov won the weeklong Georgia race as his Team High Road teammate Greg Henderson won the 63-mile final stage - 10 laps on a 6.3-mile course. The course in downtown Atlanta was swept before the race, but late-morning rain washed debris back onto the streets, possibly including broken glass from the March 14 tornado that hit downtown Atlanta. Windows in high-rise hotels and office buildings near Centennial Olympic Park - the site of Sunday's start and finish - are still being replaced.According to one estimate, there were 17 flat tires in the first 30 minutes of Sunday's final stage.
| Wes Helms homers in 10th inning to lift Marlins over Brewers Sun, 27 Apr 2008 19:54 EDT Wes Helms came through in just his fourth start of the year, hitting a solo home run leading off the 10th inning to lift the Florida Marlins to a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.Helms hit an 0-2 pitch off Seth McClung (1-1) about five feet over the left-field wall for his first home run since last Aug. 10.
