Raiders turn tables on Red Devils Tue, 22 Apr 2008 11:29:26 -0500 Warren East hasn’t had the most explosive offense lately, but a little bit was enough in Monday’s 1-0 victory over visiting Owensboro. Warren East (8-10) scratched across a run in the middle innings and Josh Lamastus and Mark Biggs combined to three-hit an Owensboro team that beat the Raiders 5-1 two days earlier. “I watched them play down in Franklin (earlier this month) and I felt like we had a good chance, but they are definitely a good team,” WEHS coach Wes Sanford said. “Josh did a good job of keeping their sticks off balance. They have a couple of guys that are very dangerous.” Lamastus allowed three singles over 61/3 innings, striking out five while walking one. “He’s been steady,” Sanford said. “The last four games he’s thrown well, definitely well enough to win every game he’s thrown. I don’t think we’ve fielded the ball as well as we needed to when he is on the mound and he’s picked up some losses because of it. We made the plays tonight and he made some good pitches to get him out of a jam.” Lamastus credited his change up and his teammates for his masterful performance. “I knew they were going to hit the ball so I wasn’t trying to overpower them,” Lamastus said. “I got a good defense. They work hard and they had my back tonight.” Warren East scored the only run of the game in the fourth, taking advantage of a couple of misreads from the Owensboro outfielders. Biggs led off with a fly ball that curled away from Owensboro right fielder Davey Murphy and into the corner for a standup triple. Josh Murphy followed with a fly ball to center that dropped in for an RBI double when Zack Knight lost it in the air. The Raiders had a chance to add to the lead, with runners at second and third and one out, but both runners were left on base. Two innings later, the Raiders had a runner at third with one out. Pinch runner Dentez Percell tried to score on a suicide squeeze, but Donnie Lowe missed on the bunt attempt and Percell was tagged out. “It was a curve ball and he hadn’t seen a curve ball yet from that guy,” Sanford said. The Raiders finished the game with just four hits and five runners left on base. “We left so many guys on base,” Sanford said. “We’ve got to take advantage of the times we get them. It wasn’t like we’re asking a lot, because we had guys at third with one out or no out and left them stranded. We just have to get better offensively.” Owensboro (15-4) also had chances to score, especially in its final two at-bats. The Red Devils had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth, but Lamastus got a strike out and fly out to end the inning. One inning later, Lamastus struck out the leadoff hitter before Yantae Williams reached on an error and the Raiders went to Biggs to close the game. Biggs struck out Jacob Roberts, intentionally walked Jon Hedges and got a force out to end the threat. Lamastus said he would have liked to finish the game, but he understood why the Raiders went to Biggs. “I just let my reliever do all the work for me,” Lamastus said. “He knew what he was doing. It was the right call.” Biggs had two of the Raiders four hits, while Murphy and Kyle Tooley had the other two hits. Warren East will return to action at 6 p.m. tonight when it hosts Owensboro Catholic. OHS 000 000 0 - 0 3 1 WEHS 000 100 x - 1 4 2 WP: Lamastus; LP: Gilliam; S: Biggs
Rainey, Cook on AP all-state squads Tue, 22 Apr 2008 11:29:31 -0500 After a basketball season in which both Ashley Rainey and Kelleshia Cook shined as two of the top players in Region 4, the honors kept coming Monday afternoon - both players received all-state recognition from The Associated Press. Rainey, who finished third in the state in scoring with 27.8 points per game as a junior at Warren East, was named to the AP’s first team, while Cook, who led Franklin-Simpson to the state title game as a senior, received second-team honors. “It means a lot,” said Rainey, who also averaged 10.9 rebounds to go along with 2.5 steals and two blocks per contest. “It says a lot about not just me, but also our team and our players and it’s just a great opportunity to be honored like this.” Warren East coach Angie Anderson said that perhaps the one thing that makes Rainey most special is her ability to play within the team and do whatever is necessary to win. “Statistically it’s certainly been a luxury for me, to know that a player on your team is going to give you 27 points a game - a lot of coaches in their career can’t say that,” Anderson said. “But I’ve also been fortunate enough to have kids who know their role, and aren’t jealous - so what makes Ashley Rainey so special is her teammates around her. “This honor is Ashley’s without a doubt, but some of it also goes to the kids who consistently give her the ball, because there would be no 27 points a game if we didn’t have the kids that were unselfish and just wanted to win.” While Rainey has gotten what Anderson called the biggest burden of the offseason out of the way (her commitment to Louisville), the talk of her as a leading candidate for Kentucky’s Miss Basketball next season has already begun. “It really isn’t a (distraction). It’d be great to win it, but if I don’t we’re still going to work hard and try to get even further than we did this year,” said Rainey, who led the Lady Raiders to the Region 4 tournament before falling to Cook and eventual champion Franklin-Simpson. “My first goal is to win district and get past that first or second round of regionals,” she said. “We’re going to try to be like Franklin was and be another team out of the Bowling Green area to get to the (state tournament). “It’s nice. It feels like a weight is lifted off of me and I just focus on playing - it’s my senior year now and I just want to win.” Cook racked up 15.1 points, 6.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 4.5 steals a game this season for a Lady Cats team that made it to the state finals. She said making the AP team after such a great season was a special honor. “It’s very exciting,” said Cook, who also found out today that she has been selected to play in this year’s Anthem Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Classic. “Making all-state is an honor, and being in the state tournament and playing really good was nice, too. “(Freshman teammate) Chastity Gooch played well and so did I and I guess it showed because I made all-state.” Franklin-Simpson coach Lex Lindsey said the award was simply a fine cap to a tremendous career. “She’s been the catalyst for our team the past five years, and she will be sorely missed - her graduation is really going to hurt my IQ,” Lindsey said. “It’s a cherry on the sundae and a little icing on the cake and it’s very well deserved and I’m just really proud of her. “I was up at the (Kentucky-Indiana) tryouts and I told some people down here that if she’s not on the team, I’m going to stay in girls’ basketball a long time, because the people that do the choosing - I want to keep coaching against those guys.”
Toppers go JUCO route for PG signee Tue, 22 Apr 2008 11:29:36 -0500 Motlow State Community College point guard Anthony Sally has apparently become Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald’s first signed recruit. According to Rivals.com, Sally has signed with the Hilltoppers, although no confirmation of the signing has come from WKU officials. McDonald was unavailable for comment this morning. When contacted this morning, Motlow State coach Bobby Steinburg declined to comment until WKU had made its announcement. Sally wasn’t a big scorer at Motlow State in Lynchburg, Tenn. - averaging only 7.9 points while shooting 42 percent from the field and just less than 28 percent from 3-point range. But the 6-foot-2 185-product of Richmond, Va., also averaged 7.6 assists, 7.1 rebounds and 3.4 steals. Motlow State went 28-5 and was ranked No. 15 in the NJCAA Men’s Division I Basketball poll. Before playing last season at Motlow State, Sally spent one season at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College. Sally’s signing would help fill the void created by prep players Ronald Nored and Bryan Narcisse, who opted recently not to attend WKU. Both had signed with the Hilltoppers and former coach Darrin Horn in November, but were released from their scholarships when McDonald took over earlier this month. Nored signed with Butler and Narcisse inked with Clemson. Sally could also help provide depth at a position where WKU could use some bodies. Second-team All-Sun Belt Conference point guard Tyrone Brazelton wrapped up his Hilltopper career this past season and averaged 14.4 points as a senior. Only will-be senior Orlando Mendez-Valdez has considerable point-guard experience with the Hilltoppers. Mendez-Valdez played 19 minutes a game last season and averaged 5.7 points. He finished with 79 assists and 64 turnovers.

Chad Johnson should sit out, Lewis says Tue, 22 Apr 2008 14:51 EDT CINCINNATI — Tired of Chad Johnsons posturing for a trade, Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis says the disgruntled receiver should keep his word and sit out the season.Lewis also said Tuesday that linebacker David Pollack is leaning toward retirement. The former first-round draft pick broke a bone in his neck while making a tackle during the 2006 season.Pollacks decision isnt a surprise. He has said all along that he doubted he would return if there was a chance he could injure the neck again. Lewis comments about Johnson were his strongest yet. The Pro Bowl receiver has been disgruntled since the middle of last season, when his look-at-me antics came under criticism.Since the end of last season, Johnson has been lobbying for a trade even though he agreed to a long-term deal with the Bengals two years ago. Johnsons contract would pay him $3 million next season and extends through 2010, with a club option for 2011.Although Johnson stopped talking to reporters in Cincinnati last season, he has done numerous national interviews in which he threatened to sit out the season if hes not traded. Lewis responded Tuesday by saying he should follow through with his threat.
Dolphins pull off a surprise by signing OL Jake Long Tue, 22 Apr 2008 16:59 EDT Last week, Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland stood in front of the South Florida media and said of the first overall pick in the draft: "This guy is going to be - you hope that he's a pillar of your defense for a long time."Turns out, it was standard draft disinformation. At the time, Miami was negotiating with Jake Long, the Michigan offensive tackle. Ireland did a great acting job. That's what the draft is all about: everyone lies. Or, to put it more accurately, dissembles. If anyone is allowed to spew out untruths, it's a team official in the few weeks before the draft - everyone hides his intentions so the other 31 teams are as confused as fans and the media. In this case, the dissembling was based on the personality of Bill Parcells, who is now running the Dolphins.Parcells has spent the last two decades trying to find another great pass rusher, the next Lawrence Taylor. Turns out, he chose someone more akin to Jumbo Elliott, who Parcells coached with the Giants and Jets - a Michigan offensive tackle.

To whet your anticipation; buy all the preview magazines; and get your red/blue loathing on.As you read this, it's exactly 130 days until Kentucky and Louisville renew the Governor's Cup football rivalry.Last year's UK-U of L battle was the most anticipated in the modern history of the series. Both teams had legitimate reason to think they'd be strong -- a rarity in the history of our state's signature college football rivalry. Both had an unusual level of star power in the offensive skill positions, starting with senior stars in quarterbacks Andre Woodson and Brian Brohm. The homegrown QB standouts are gone, and so are a bevy of future NFL receivers from both schools. |

Seahawks release former MVP running back Shaun Alexander Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:53 EDT From MVP to vilified to unemployed in a little more than two years. Shaun Alexander's free fall in Seattle was completed Tuesday when the Seahawks cut the running back who led them to their only Super Bowl appearance in 2006 and was rewarded soon after with a $62 million contract. For Alexander, the two seasons since he received that eight-year deal have been filled with injuries, ineffectiveness and incessant boos."Yeah, it's sad, really," Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said while announcing the defending four-time NFC West champions released Alexander unconditionally, hours after the running back passed a physical.Ruskell could've been talking about the Seattle fan's relationship with the always-smiling star, who earned a reputation for being a bit passive. The 30-year-old Alexander went to three Pro Bowls, but was never the most beloved player on the Seahawks.
Lupol's OT tally lifts Flyers over Capitals 3-2 in Game 7 Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:51 EDT The Philadelphia Flyers finally figured out how to put away the Washington Capitals. Joffrey Lupul netted a rebound during a power play 6:06 into overtime in Game 7 to lift Philadelphia past Alex Ovechkin and Washington 3-2 on Tuesday night in their Eastern Conference first-round series. The Flyers led the best-of-seven series 3-1 before allowing the Capitals to pull even."For some reason, we don't like to do it the easy way," Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn said. "We like to grind it out and do it the hard way. But it's a great feeling to get this series won."Lupul found space in front of the net to get a backhander past Cristobal Huet after Washington's goalie had deflected Kimmo Timonen's shot."You're on a power play, the puck goes to the net, you end up banging it in, and 20 guys are ramming you into the boards," Lupul said about the celebration after his first playoff goal. "I'm still catching my breath right now. I'm sure it'll sink in here in the next couple of hours."
Pedroia's RBI double helps Red Sox rally to 6th straight win Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:05 EDT Dustin Pedroia's tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning helped the Boston Red Sox rally for their sixth straight win, 7-6 over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night after ace Josh Beckett was scratched from his start with a stiff neck.It was the teams' first meeting since Boston swept Los Angeles in last year's American League Divisional playoffs.Jacoby Ellsbury hit two solo homers and Kevin Youkilis added a two-run shot for Boston, while Pedroia went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a single.Beckett, the majors' only 20-game winner last year, started the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back before making his first start April 6. It wasn't immediately known when he'd make his next start.Boston emergency starter David Pauley, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Pawtucket, made his fourth major league start - and first since 2006 - and gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 1-3 innings.
Disputed call helps Pirates rally to end 6-game losing skid Tue, 22 Apr 2008 22:53 EDT Xavier Nady's two-run single completed a three-run Pirates comeback after a questionable call apparently cost them a run in the sixth inning, and Pittsburgh ended a six-game losing streak by beating Florida 3-2 on Tuesday night.Paul Maholm (1-2) limited the Marlins to one run and four hits over six innings, ending a slide in which Pirates starting pitchers had an 11.38 ERA over the six games. The Marlins' three-game winning streak was also halted.Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco (1-2) allowed only one hit, Maholm's single, over five shutout innings and appeared to get a break in the sixth when second base umpire Scott Barry called Nate McLouth out at second on a steal attempt. TV replays showed McLouth coming up from his pop-up slide, his foot on the base, before he was tagged by second baseman Dan Uggla. The call, argued briefly by manager John Russell, may have been what the Pirates needed to shake themselves out of their slump. They responded with four consecutive two-out hits, with Freddy Sanchez and Jason Bay getting singles ahead of Ryan Doumit's game-tying RBI double.Nady ran his hitting streak to 10 games with a single that made it 3-1 and gave Maholm (1-2) his first win in seven starts since beating Colorado on Aug. 23. The Pirates, outscored 58-16 during the losing streak, hadn't led since being ahead of the Cubs 1-0 in the second inning of a 3-2 loss Friday.
