| Tops grab third from ASU Mon, 21 Apr 2008 11:06:43 CDT Western Kentucky finished off a Sun Belt Conference sweep in emphatic fashion Sunday, blasting Arkansas State 13-5 at Nick Denes Field. WKU (23-16, 10-8) pounded out a season-high in hits and used back-to-back five-run innings to pull away from the Indians. “I thought today maybe overall was as solid a performance as we’ve had all year,” WKU coach Chris Finwood said. “We played very well Friday night and (Saturday) we played well enough to win. Today I thought we had a lot of energy and enthusiasm. “Colby Beach gave us his best start of the year on the mound and being able to put 10 runs together in two innings after they scratch back, that was big.” Three WKU batters finished with career highs in hits, including outfielder Matt Hightower, who had four hits and four RBIs. “He had a really big day offensively for us,” Finwood said. “He had some big hits. Four RBIs out of your two-hole guy, that was great.” Arkansas State (16-24, 5-13) jumped ahead 1-0, but Hightower sparked a three-run rally in the second inning. With the score tied 1-1 and a runner at third base and two out, Hightower scorched a line drive to left center that hit the wall and bounced away from ASU centerfielder Derrick Coleman. Hightower then raced around the bases and slid into home for an inside-the-park home run that gave WKU a 3-1 lead. Hightower said he can’t remember the last time he had an inside-the-park homer. “I may have had one in the summer somewhere when I was little, but I can’t remember,” Hightower said. “I saw it hit the wall ... and shoot off the wall past him. I knew I had three at that point. Then I saw (third base coach Andrew Slater) wheeling me around. I just kept on motoring. By the time I got to third those legs started burning a little bit. I was winded for probably another one or two innings there.” Arkansas State chipped away with runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score at 3-3, but the WKU bats busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Western sent nine batters to the plate and scored five times, giving the Hilltoppers an 8-3 lead. The Indians cut the deficit to 8-5 in the top of the seventh, but WKU answered again with another five-run inning - capped by a two-run homer by Terrence Dayleg - that gave the Hilltoppers their final margin of victory. “All we talked about in pregame was having energy and how big it was, when you have a chance to sweep, to get it done,” Finwood said. “That was a good ball game for five innings, six innings. We were able to hang in there and pull away toward the end.” Colby Beach went six innings to earn the win. The right-hander allowed five hits and two earned runs, while striking out five. Jake Wells and Matt Payton both equaled career highs with three hits each. Scott Kaskie and Chad Cregar also had three hits and Wade Gaynor finished with a pair of hits for the Hilltoppers. Jett Jones took the loss, allowing 12 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. WKU will conclude its six-game home stand when it hosts Kentucky at 6 p.m. Wednesday. | Big Brown, Colonel John 1-2 in final Derby Top 10 Mon, 21 Apr 2008 11:06:44 CDT A few fillies could be in, War Pass is out and trainer Todd Pletcher might have three horses for the Kentucky Derby. Despite a flurry of Derby doings, the final Run to the Roses Top 10 list by The Associated Press didn’t change much from a week ago: Unbeaten Florida Derby winner Big Brown remains No. 1, with Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John at No. 2. The owners of Proud Spell and Eight Belles are considering their fillies for the Derby and could make their decisions after the Derby post-position draw April 30. War Pass, the 2-year-old champion who finished second in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, has a left front ankle injury and is out until the fall, trainer Nick Zito said. “It just wasn’t meant to be, maybe,” said Zito, a two-time Derby winner. “It’s a shame because he has all the ability in the world. He’s one of the best I’ve ever had.” The trainer still has two 3-year-olds headed to the Derby in Cool Coal Man and Anak Nakal. Pletcher, meanwhile, was down to his last few Derby hopes the past two weeks and his colts came through in a big way. Monba and Cowboy Cal - the 1-2 finishers in the Blue Grass Stakes on April 12 - are headed to Louisville, and Pletcher might also send Behindatthebar to the Derby after his win in Saturday’s Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Now comes the graded-stakes earnings watch. If more than 20 are entered in the Derby - and it appears there will be - preference is given to horses with the most earnings in grade stakes races. Pyro, No. 6 in this week’s top 10, is first on the earnings chart at $1,020,000. Both fillies are in the top 20, and Bob Black Jack is 20th at $180,000. The horses ranked 21-25 are Denis of Cork, Halo Najib, Indian Sun, Tomcito and El Gato Malo. Big Brown, 3-for-3 by a combined 29 lengths, will have one more workout at Palm Meadows training center in Boynton Beach, Fla., before being shipped to Kentucky on April 28. Trainer Rick Dutrow said “we’re as happy as we can be.” with the colt owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa. War Pass dropped out from No. 5, and Bob Black Jack was replaced at No. 10 by Smooth Air, runner-up in the Florida Derby. --- 1. Suns guard Leandro Barbosa won the award last year and Ginobili came in second."He's one of the better players in the NBA, who just happens to come off the bench," said Spurs starting guard Michael Finley. "Any other team in the league, he'd probably be starting, but for him to come off the bench and put his ego aside it just shows what kind of team we have, and more importantly what kind of player and All-Star he is." |

| Walk-off winners Mon, 21 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT Walk-off homers or walk-off walks, one is as effective as the other.Brian Spear's bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning Sunday forced Keenan Wiley home and lifted Kentucky to a 3-2 victory over Florida.Wiley had half of UK's six hits, including a leadoff bloop double to start the 10th."We knew they'd been throwing a lot of fastballs away, and that's really the pitch I was looking for," Wiley said. "And I got it."The rubber game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series would have ended in a tie had UK not scored in the 10th. League travel curfew for "get-away day" games meant that no inning could begin after 4 p.m. It was 4:05 when Spear took ball four. |
| Comeback gives Reds a reason to smile Mon, 21 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT When Edwin Encarnacion came to bat in the bottom of the 10th against Brewers closer Eric Gagne, the few thousand rain-chilled fans left in the stands began to boo.Encarnacion expected it.The third baseman let Milwaukee pull ahead in the top of the inning with yet another error. | Scott Skiles takes over as new head coach of Milwaukee Bucks Mon, 21 Apr 2008 19:51 EDT The Milwaukee Bucks need to play tougher defense, and start sharing the ball on offense. So they're turning to Scott Skiles, the man who owns the NBA's single-game assist record - and who once got into a fight with Shaquille O'Neal during his playing days and lived to tell the tale. The Bucks introduced Skiles as their new coach Monday, signing the former Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns coach to a four-year deal to replace someone Skiles considers a close friend, Larry Krystkowiak. And while Skiles said he learned some lessons after the Bulls fired him in December, he isn't backing away from his reputation for demanding a lot from his players."I always feel like I'm supposed to apologize for that," Skiles said. "And I'm not sure that's the tack I want to take. Anybody that is going to come to work with enthusiasm, concentrate and play hard will never have a problem with me. | Titans looking to provide Vince Young with more playmakers Mon, 21 Apr 2008 16:23 EDT Vince Young has an offensive rookie of the year award and a playoff appearance in his first two NFL seasons. His offensive numbers in that time? Well, he can run really well. And while Young has had memorable moments as a passer, he's not had nearly enough of them. That's why the Titans announced after a 17-6 wild-card loss to San Diego that their offseason focus would be improving the offense. They have been busy in free agency, and now the Titans prepare for the NFL Draft with their first-round pick, No. 24 overall, likely to be used on offense. General manager Mike Reinfeldt says Tennessee wants to continue adding playmakers."If one were looking for a playmaker, you could argue we're in a good spot to get a pretty good guy at 24," Reinfeldt said.Tennessee already has signed tight end Alge Crumpler, given receiver Justin Gage a new deal and brought back receiver Justin McCareins for a second stint. Coach Jeff Fisher fired Norm Chow and lured Mike Heimerdinger back as his offensive coordinator. |
| Falcons GM Dimitroff says he's had offers for No. 3 pick Mon, 21 Apr 2008 16:08 EDT Thomas Dimitroff faces a crucial decision Saturday with the Atlanta Falcons holding the third pick in the NFL draft.Does Dimitroff, in his first year as general manager, select Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan to further distance the Falcons from the Michael Vick era?Would defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey of Louisiana State be the wise choice, especially since the Falcons could take a quarterback with one of their three second-round picks?Other possibilities may include Virginia defensive end Chris Long, Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston. The Miami Dolphins, who have the first pick, have been in negotiations with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long. |
| Ravens have many holes to fill in NFL draft _ not just at QB Mon, 21 Apr 2008 15:53 EDT If quarterback was the only position of concern for the Baltimore Ravens, their strategy for the NFL draft would be simple: Trade up from No. 8 to make sure Matt Ryan is wearing purple and black this fall.Even before Steve McNair announced his retirement last week, the Ravens targeted quarterback as a deficiency. In falling from 13-3 in 2006 to 5-11 last season, Baltimore's offense sputtered under the direction of an injured McNair, an inconsistent Kyle Boller and a raw Troy Smith. There's no guarantee Ryan is the answer, and that's one reason why the Ravens are reluctant to move up to get him. General manager Ozzie Newsome forked over his first-round pick and a second rounder in 2003 to get Boller, whose development has been so slow that Baltimore selected Smith last season and is strongly considering taking another quarterback in the first round Saturday. But the Ravens are also thin at cornerback, defensive end and safety, and will likely need a new left tackle if Jonathan Ogden limps into retirement after a frustrating 2007 season. So, when asked last week if might trade up from eighth overall, Newsome replied, "I think the biggest obstacle for people trading up is what they have to give up to move up into that top five. It's not easy to move up into the top five (or) to the top six without basically giving up the majority of your draft." |
| Ortiz backs Buchholz with 3 RBIs as Red Sox win 4th straight Mon, 21 Apr 2008 15:28 EDT Clay Buchholz pitched six shutout innings, David Ortiz drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and the Boston Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers with an 8-3 win Monday.Julio Lugo went 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI as the Red Sox scored at least five runs for the ninth straight game. They finished with 12 hits and 11 walks. The annual game on Patriots Day - a holiday commemorating Paul Revere's ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 - began at 11:06 a.m. It takes place on the same day as the Boston Marathon. Runners passed by Fenway Park starting in the third inning and kept going for hours - just like the Red Sox offense. And they did it without two of their leading hitters. Manny Ramirez, who was ejected for arguing a third strike in the second inning Sunday, is batting .338 and got the day off. Lefty hitter Sean Casey, with a .349 average, rested against lefty Kason Gabbard.Boston rallied late to win its previous two games but didn't need a comeback this time as it scored five runs in a wild fourth inning and three in the fifth, all off Dustin Nippert (1-2). |

| Red Wings blank Predators 3-0 to advance to Western semis Mon, 21 Apr 2008 07:53 EDT The Detroit Red Wings can take a couple days to rest up. | Newton recommended Ford to OSU Sun, 20 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT Officially, basketball elder statesman C.M. Newton keeps a hand in the game as a consultant for the Southeastern Conference. Unofficially, he's also the wise oracle approached by schools looking to hire a coach. That's what Oklahoma State did after firing Sean Sutton as coach. The Cowboys' athletic director, Mike Holder, knew he wanted to hire Bill Self of Kansas. Yet he still called Newton for advice."How'd you hire Rick Pitino?" Holder asked in reference to Newton's 1989 coup in hiring Pitino away from the New York Knicks.Newton thought Oklahoma State had a chance to hire Self. OSU was Self's alma mater. The school could rightly say it not only wanted him to return home, but needed him to return home. When Self decided to stay at Kansas, Holder called Newton for advice on what coach to approach. Newton pondered what coach could enjoy small-town life in Stillwater, Okla. What coach had proven ability to rebuild programs. And when Holder said he wanted to hire a young coach who could relate to players, Newton recommended Travis Ford. |
| Back in a clash | Slideshow: UK White-Blue game Sun, 20 Apr 2008 12:19 EDT Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks ditched the usual offense vs. defense format to put his team in a competitive, game-like situation for Saturday's Blue-White Spring Game.Brooks got what he wanted and then some, as the White team held on for a 23-22 win in front of an estimated crowd of 8,500 at Commonwealth Stadium.Offensive coordinator Joker Phillips and defensive coordinator Steve Brown drafted the two teams earlier in the week, and the rosters appeared to be evenly matched."You couldn't have asked for a much more balanced or competitive game," Brooks said. "We couldn't have drawn it up or scripted it better. I was pleased with quite a few things. It's a good testament to where this program has come from to have the depth to put on a game like this and have it look like a reasonable semblance of a football game."Quarterbacks Curtis Pulley and Mike Hartline both led their offenses to impressive late fourth-quarter drives as they continue their battle to be the No. 1 guy. |
