Titans come to town Fri, 18 Apr 2008 21:34:13 CDT The NFL season doesn’t kick off for another five months, but that didn’t stop hundreds of local fans from attending the annual Tennessee Titans Caravan at the Shoe Carnival on Friday. Titans wide receiver Justin Gage, radio announcer Mike Keith and team mascot T-Rac were all on hand to interact with the fans, signing autographs and posing for photos. Bowling Green has been a part of the event since its inception. This year, selected Titans players, broadcasters and T-Rac will have made 50 stops in 11 days. “The Bowling Green area is a big reason that we do the caravan,” Keith said. “We sell ourselves very much as a regional team and I think we back it up by going out and bringing LP Field to the people. We try to go see our fans and give them a chance to interact with the players.” For veteran wideout Gage, this is his first chance to participate in the fan-friendly event. “You don’t get this opportunity during the season to get out in the communities and lend a helping hand, visit with the people, or be an inspiration for the kids,” Gage said. “It’s something I’ve never done before and never even heard of (before signing with the Titans), but it’s special. Being a part of the community, that’s a beautiful thing right there.” The Titans are coming off a 10-6 season and a wild card berth in the AFC playoffs, where they fell to San Diego in the opening round. Tennessee has made a big splash in the offseason, re-signing former Titan defensive end Jevon Kearse and adding tight end Algie Crumpler on the offensive side. There is also speculation that the Titans could add even more depth on the offensive end with its first-round pick in next week’s NFL draft. Tennessee has the 24th selection overall and some expect the Titans to take a wide receiver. Among the possibilities: Michigan State’s Devin Thomas, Oklahoma’s Malcolm Kelly, Indiana’s James Hardy or former Vince Young teammate Limas Sweed from Texas. “The more weapons you have, the more problems you cause the defense,” Gage said. “That is what we’re looking for now. Bringing Algie in gives us Bo Scaife and Algie Crumpler - two tight ends that can match up against any linebacker in the league and win battles. Bringing in a young receiver, that is someone that is going to be able to come in and show he can play. It will be a definite advantage to our offense.” Earlier this week, the Titans and their fans got a chance to see the 2008 schedule for the first time. The highlights include a pair of nationally televised games - one at home and one on the road. Tennessee will host AFC South rival Indianapolis on Monday, Oct. 27 - the Titans’ first homefield primetime game since 2004. “Being at home on a Monday and having that nation watching and everybody around the Tennessee area to support us, that will be a beautiful thing,” Gage said. “We are anxious about it. It all starts with that opening game against Jacksonville.” The Titans will also make their fifth Thanksgiving appearance in franchise history when they travel to Detroit to face the Lions on Nov. 27. Gage, who played with the Chicago Bears against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving in 2004, said it’s a special opportunity. “It’s tough because it’s a short week and you only get a day or so to prepare for, but being able to play on Thanksgiving when everybody is with their families, eating turkey and having a good time, that’s a special opportunity,” he said. The schedule also includes home games against Pittsburgh and Cleveland and road games at Baltimore, Cincinnati, Chicago and Kansas City. “We’re real eager, knowing that everything is falling into place,” Gage said. “We were able to make it the playoffs last year and have the core of our team back. I’m excited about getting back on the field and getting started.”
G’wood’s Fields to play for N.C. college Fri, 18 Apr 2008 21:34:14 CDT Just three seasons ago, Cameron Fields didn’t even make Greenwood’s varsity golf team. Fast-forward to the present - Fields hasn’t only played in a state tournament for the Gators, but he’s also taking his game to the collegiate level. Fields, who was cut from the varsity squad as a sophomore at Greenwood, saw his hard work pay off Friday as he signed a letter of intent to play college golf at Pfeiffer University, a Division II school in Misenheimer, N.C. “It feels great, I didn’t start playing golf until I was 14,” Fields said. “I just kind of picked it up. My dad played a lot and I played baseball all my life, so I kind of had the swing down. “So I just kept working at it and I’m surprised that I’m at this level right now. It’s a great opportunity to play college golf and I’m very excited.” For a player like Fields - whom Greenwood golf coach Blane Embry referred to as a “golf baby” in regard to his playing experience - making it to this level meant countless hours of practice to not only catch up to but surpass many of his peers, who had been playing for several years. “Anytime it was nice outside I was out there hitting balls, or putting or chipping or something,” Fields said. “Anything to help my game, I’d always be calling up my teammates to come play with me to help me get used to the competition and the pressure.” Fields, who was part of the 2007 Greenwood team that finished 11th overall in the state, said the main selling point from Pfeiffer University was its location. The school is near Charlotte, N.C., an area where Fields lived a child. Fields said the majority of his family, outside of his immediate relatives, still live in the area. “I lived there for eight years and grew up there,” said Fields, who also considered Kentucky Wesleyan. “Golf is really big in that area and the golf courses are great. “It’s a small town that has everything, and then 20 minutes away you have a big city in Charlotte - it’s just a great place.”

Injured War Pass to miss Ky. Derby Sat, 19 Apr 2008 15:25 EDT Champion War Pass, out of the Kentucky Derby with a leg injury, will be on the sidelines for "a few months," according to his trainer, Nick Zito. The injury, revealed Saturday by stable connections, was a small fracture in the colt's left front sesamoid, a small bone at the rear of the ankle.Zito said the colt is walking "sound," which would indicate War Pass is not in pain. The injury was discovered with digital X-rays and is thought to be recent.Zito said veterinarian Dr. Rick Fisher thinks the injury might have occurred during the running of the Wood Memorial April 5, when War Pass was the runner-up to Tail of Ekati. War Pass battled for the lead in that race, which was run with lightning fast fractions in the initial furlongs."It's at the back of the ankle, and it pulled away from the sesamoid," said Zito. "It's very small."
Pulley, Hartline on equal footing Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT As is the case with most spring games, all eyes at Commonwealth Stadium figure to be on the quarterbacks when the University of Kentucky holds its annual Blue-White Spring Game on Saturday afternoon. And while Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks said Saturday's scrimmage will be a factor in the quarterback race between Curtis Pulley and Mike Hartline, it figures to be some time before a starter is named."It'll give us an idea of at least where to start going into fall," said Brooks, who labeled the competition 'close.' "Somebody will be first-string after (the spring game), but whether that sticks, I don't know."There are several factors that will keep the quarterback battle going. First and foremost, neither Pulley nor Hartline has separated himself from the other. But Brooks hasn't been too hard on the quarterbacks this spring, noting that bad weather and an inexperienced group of receivers have played a big part in the ugliness of the passing game this spring. Offensive coordinator Joker Phillips said Pulley and Hartline have basically been equal this spring.
Cats blow 6-run lead then rally in eighth Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT The pressure clearly was on Kentucky.A weekend after being swept at Georgia, the baseball Wildcats blew a 6-0 lead over Florida and were staring at a 7-6 deficit in the eighth inning. The Cats responded big-time Friday night, scoring five runs in the eighth to pull out an 11-7 victory. A raucous crowd of 3,036 -- believed to be the first time Cliff Hagan Stadium has topped 3,000 for a Southeastern Conference game -- got credit for the save."I personally want to thank everybody for creating an SEC-caliber atmosphere here tonight," UK Coach John Cohen said. "Our kids just play so much better when we have that environment here."Sawyer Carroll's career-high five RBI sparked the Cats. Carroll and Ryan Wilkes each had three of UK's 12 hits. Keenan Wiley and Collin Cowgill had two-hit nights, with Cowgill reaching base on all five of his plate appearances, including two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
One last chance for Derby hopefuls Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT The Johnny-come-lately of Derby preps, the Coolmore Lexington Stakes, has evolved for some into the most important prep. Some call it the Last Ditch Derby: the last chance for some to win enough graded stakes earnings to get into the top 20 eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby. It's been quite an evolution for the Lexington Stakes, a race few took seriously until trainer D. Wayne Lukas launched Derby winner Charismatic in this 11/16-mile event. Now the race is on every radar screen as horses progress along the Derby campaign trail. Several in Saturday's field of 11 are considered possible entrants in the Derby if they can win sufficient money at Keeneland. It's their last chance, with no other graded stakes offered for Derby hopefuls prior to the first Saturday in May.
Liggins making an impression in Louisville Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT When he arrived Thursday afternoon, Kentucky recruit DeAndre Liggins did not have time to check into a hotel. That left one big question: Can he gain his academic eligibility to wow UK fans next season?"It's coming along well," Liggins said of the effort to become academically eligible. "I'm on the verge of qualifying."Liggins took a college entrance exam last Saturday. "I feel good about that," he said.If he came to Louisville to impress UK fans, Liggins would not admit it. He spoke of a more grounded aspiration.
UofL's Cantwell solidifies starting QB spot Sat, 19 Apr 2008 07:23 EDT Hunter Cantwell scrambled to his right, waited for Scott Long to finish his crossing pattern over the middle and fired a perfect 5-yard bullet for the touchdown.Nothing flashy. Nothing awe-inspiring. But for a player who has waited three long years to finally become the starting quarterback at Louisville, it was enough to signify that his time has come.Cantwell threw for 103 yards and a score during Louisville's annual Spring Game on Friday night, leading the offense to a 38-17 win over the defense. The game was played under a modified scoring system that awarded the defense for stops and turnovers. Cantwell's steady play seemed to solidify his hold on the starting job heading into training camp. Not bad for a former walk-on who spent most of his first three seasons subbing _ superbly at times _ for Brian Brohm. Though coach Steve Kragthorpe said during spring practice that the starting job was up for grabs, Cantwell knew his coach was simply challenging him to step up."I kind of always felt like (the starting job) was mine to lose," Cantwell said. "I know nothing is guaranteed, it's still not. (Backups) Matt (Simms) and Tyler (Wolfe) are amazing quarterbacks. They have amazing talent, but I want to play."
Now's the time to 86 No. 85 Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:05 EDT Cutting Chris Henry was a start.Overdue, but a start. Now it's time for the Cincinnati Bengals to take the next step.Trade Ocho Stinko. Or cut him, as the Bengals did the troubled Henry after another run-in with the law. Chad Johnson deserves a similar exit. After all, for the NFL franchise to muster a shot at rebounding in 2008, it must rid itself of its selfish, spoiled, preening, overrated wide receiver.Never mind the four years remaining on Johnson's $28 million contract, awarded just two years ago. Never mind the 93 balls he caught last season, or the 1,440 receiving yards, his sixth straight year over the century mark. Never mind the $8 million salary-cap hit the Bengals would take by either releasing or trading their headache of a wideout.
Isiah Thomas fired as coach of New York Knicks Sat, 19 Apr 2008 07:24 EDT Isiah Thomas assembled a bad roster, and he's the latest Knicks coach to lose his job because he couldn't make it a winner. Donnie Walsh is certain he will find plenty willing to try.Thomas was fired Friday after a season of listless and dreadful basketball, a tawdry lawsuit and unending chants from fans demanding his dismissal. The Knicks are now in need of their sixth different coach since Thomas became team president during the 2003-04 season. And Walsh, who this month replaced him as president, is sure he'll get a good one."I will get calls," Walsh said. "This is a coveted job. People want to coach here."None have won in a while. Jeff Van Gundy was the last coach to escape the Knicks with a winning record - they were 10-9 when he stepped down early in the 2001-02 season.

Sheets dominates before early exit in Brewers' 5-2 win Sat, 19 Apr 2008 07:59 EDT Ben Sheets dominated for five innings before a tight pitching arm forced him from the game Friday night, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 5-2 victory over the slumping Cincinnati Reds.Sheets (3-0) allowed only a pair of singles, looking very comfortable in a hitter-friendly ballpark where he has never lost. At age 29, the hard-throwing right-hander is having one of the best Aprils of his career, allowing only three earned runs in four games. That good start has hit a snag.Sheets felt tightness in his right triceps and left for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning with the Brewers ahead 5-0. In the last two years, Sheets has been limited by a strained groin, a torn finger tendon, shoulder tendinitis and a sore chest muscle.Sheets was coming off a 5-3 win over the Mets and Johan Santana on Sunday, when he retired 18 batters in a row over one stretch.

Hunter's 3 doubles and 3 RBIs lead Angels over Mariners 5-4 Sat, 19 Apr 2008 07:59 EDT Torii Hunter shrugged off stiffness in his neck and back from a pregame fender-bender to make a leaping catch above the center-field wall with two outs in the ninth inning, denying Richie Sexson of a two-run homer and preserving the Los Angeles Angels' 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.Hunter doubled his first three times up, driving in three runs for the Angels after his new Bentley was rear-ended near the ballpark. He was waiting at a stop light about five hours before gametime when the accident occurred. No one in either vehicle was seriously injured."I haven't had an accident in 15 years. Then I come to L.A.," said Hunter, who signed with the Angels in the offseason. "I tried to treat myself a couple of weeks ago, and look what happened."With a runner on first, Sexson, who had already homered twice, hit a drive off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez. Hunter, known for his home run-stealing catches, timed his leap at the wall perfectly and came down with the ball and a big smile.Rodriguez, pitching for the fifth time in six days, earned his seventh save.
NBA owners vote to approve the SuperSonics' relocation Sat, 19 Apr 2008 14:44 EDT Those "Save our Sonics!" chants are now desperate pleas. "I feel like I let people down. My job is to go out there and pitch."The 42-year-old left-hander had hoped to do just that Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, six days after leaving a start at Washington in the first inning. "If he's worried, there's a chance I could go out there and do a lot more damage to it."

"We were getting to crunch time and I was getting these funny things, and I just couldn't get through it." |
