Time to end 'Don't ask' Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:23:00 EST The "don't ask, don't tell" policy that continues the ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military was wrong when President Bill Clinton signed it into law in 1993, and it's wrong today. The only difference between then and now is that more people are now coming around to that conclusion.
You can help save Youth Clubhouse Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:23:00 EST Recently announced budget cuts at Seven Counties Services, our region's community center for mental health, addiction treatment and developmental disabilities services, reflect a giant step backwards in the delivery of effective prevention, treatment and recovery services for some of the most vulnerable among us.
Seniors' 'real threat' Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:24:00 EST It is difficult to understand why The Courier-Journal editorial board thinks Sen. Mitch McConnell "recklessly threatened the Medicare system" by resisting the attempt to halt cuts in payments to physicians being linked to provisions that would take Medicare Advantage accounts away from more than 9 million seniors who have chosen them.
Readers discuss domestic drilling as oil solution Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:24:00 EST I am a hybrid-driving environmentalist who strongly favors drilling our own offshore oil and gas. Far from having to make one choice between drilling and conservation/alternative sources, we need both. Since we will not be energy independent for at least 20 years, we need our own oil and gas to bridge the gap.
Producer: Beef production environmentally friendly Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:25:00 EST I'm writing in response to a letter The Courier-Journal ran on June 17 titled "Beef perils." Contrary to the misstated information in the letter, here in the United States, we're significantly ahead of the world in managing livestock production in an environmentally friendly manner.
Obama's liberal shiver Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:25:00 EST Watching liberals grope for first aid as Barack Obama does an about-face on their most cherished issues, one recalls a scene from the 1950 movie "All About Eve."
'Hard power' prevails Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:26:00 EST On the day the Colombian military freed Íngrid Betancourt and 14 other long-held hostages, the Italian Parliament passed yet another resolution demanding her release.

READERS' VIEWS - Adam Bender Mon, 14 Jul 2008 09:47 EDT Headline hurt inspiring story Lexington has an official hero and goodwill ambassador in 8-year-old Adam Bender. His family also deserves to be recognized as such, after all they have endured. Herald-Leader photographer Charles Bertram's photos were an excellent tribute to Adam and the special weekend he enjoyed with the Cincinnati Reds. I'm sure that memory is tainted by waking up to the Herald-Leader's headline .One-legged boy throws out ceremonial first pitch. Surely your writer could not be that insensitive to the feelings of a little boy who has overcome such adversity and made all of us so inspired in the process. Adam, keep up the good work. An apology is in order to you.
Fair to point out lack of ideological diversity at UK Mon, 14 Jul 2008 07:47 EDT At issue: July 2 Herald-Leader editorial, .Academic witch hunt, Toss Family Foundation fliers on the fire. The editorial charged The Family Foundation with engaging in a .witch hunt. in its efforts to shed light on taxpayer-supported political and social activism at the University of Kentucky. The Foundation also pointed out the university's hypocritical rhetoric about .diversity. when, in fact, there seems to be little diversity in the ideological makeup of its own faculty.
Foundation using religion to divide, not to embrace Mon, 14 Jul 2008 07:47 EDT At issue: June 30 Herald-Leader article, .Group Targets 6 on UK Faculty,. The attack dogs are still at work among us, this time under the banner of The Family Foundation. Many splendid comments, such as the statement by UK President Lee T. Todd Jr., have been made. But progressive religious voices have not been clearly heard, though it is a religious view that fuels this action. I am appalled that the foundation has attacked respected professors at the very best of our Kentucky universities and sought to manipulate state funding against them.
