| The Duke of Dogs Mon, 4 Aug 2008 10:55:33 -0500 When chiropractor John Erskine isn’t “cracking” bones in Bowling Green, you might find him cracking jokes with customers while serving up hot dogs or coffee at his family run eatery, store and unofficial amusement park between Scottsville and Glasgow near the Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Paradise Point marketplace, which is only open Friday through Sunday during the summer season, attracts steady crowds on weekends. Erskine calls customers by name as they come in - much of the clientele seem to be regulars at the business that has been around about four years. The kitschy but cool Boomerang Antiques and Funky Junk store is run by Erskine’s wife, Sebrina, who scours the countryside looking for items that usually trigger youthful memories in baby boomers who visit the shop. From Brownie cameras to tacky vacation souvenirs and period furniture, the display is colorful and something Sebrina Erskine said she takes pride in. Click here to view photos from Paradise Point. It is certainly not your average flea market and prices reflect that, but some bargains can be found. From U.S. 31E, the marketplace is hard to miss. The front yard might have huge pink flamingos or landscape turtles or antique boats to draw customers in. John Erskine said he wouldn’t rule out putting an old car or two there if it would attract business. Among the many visual features of the complex are a vacation mural on the side of a trailer and a huge hot dog in a bun sculpture that he bought on eBay and is yet unnamed. All the tables beside the hot dog stand feature vintage copies of the tabloid Weekly World News to keep up the light-hearted tone of the business. The hot dogs found at Harry’s Wiener Shack are Hebrew National kosher dogs and are accompanied by a wide variety of condiments - from wasabi mustard to sweet red relish. Erskine said he steams the dogs for the ultimate flavor and has often sold a couple hundred on busy weekend days. Coffee is available in several flavors and breakfast and pastries, baked goods and ice cream are also served. The marketplace will only be open for a few more weekends this summer. |
