| The Boneyard Mon, 7 Jul 2008 09:48:39 -0500 The big orange tyrannosaurus rex on Interstate 65 near the Cave City exit has new friends that can be seen from the road. Dinosaur World, an outdoor dinosaur museum with more than 100 life-sized dinosaurs, opened two new exhibits - “Mammoth Gardens” and “The Boneyard” - on Tuesday in celebration of its fifth anniversary in Cave City. “A new herd of mammoths just moved into the park,” Dinosaur World marketing director Nicole Randall said. “Now you can see the head of some of the mammoths from I-65.” “Mammoth Gardens” features life-sized and scientifically accurate adult and juvenile mammoths. The exhibit has informational plaques with tidbits about the creatures and authentic mammoth teeth and tusks. In “The Boneyard,” children and adults can dig up a stegosaurus skeleton in a unique paleontological atmosphere, Randall said. Visitors enter a sand-filled dig area and as they dig, the life-sized skeleton can gradually appear. A viewing area for adults to encourage the children is also available. “We give (participants) special tools to play in the sand,” she said. The exhibits’ first day drew a lot of people, and Randall believes that more people will visit once they find out more about the displays. “We had about 700 on opening day. We’re on track to exceed that,” she said. “We have a huge educational market, so (the new exhibits) will add to that. We have activities for core content.” Visitors can also do a variety of other things at Dinosaur World, including digging for fossils in the Fossil Dig, learning in the indoor museum, enjoying educational dinosaur movies in the movie cave, picnic areas, playgrounds and more. Dinosaur World is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to dusk. Admission is $12.75 for adults, $10.75 for seniors over 60, $9.75 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under 3 and pets on leashes. A group rate of $6 per person is also available. — For more information, call (270) 773-4345 or visit www.dinoworld.net. |
