| Locally Owned: Sewing and Vacuum Center keeping up with trends Tue, 3 Jun 2008 10:40:39 -0500 Each week, the Daily News profiles a locally owned business. Name of business: The Sewing and Vacuum Center Location: 1575 Campbell Lane, Bowling Green Type of business: Sales and service of sewing machines and vacuums. When did it open? The store has been located in Bowling Green since 1950. We have been the owners since 2004. Owners: Paulette and Jared Madison Number of employees: One Specialty: Selling sewing and embroidery machines and vacuums; ability to service most brands of sewing machines and vacuums and also share space with the Kentucky Quilt Company, which has quilting fabrics and supplies. How did the business get started? The Singer Company opened a store in the 1950s in downtown Bowling Green and operated it until the 1970s when it became an independently owned business. The store has operated continuously and in several locations before moving to the present location in 1990. What is your background? I was employed by the previous owner in 1984; my son started with the business in 1999. What are your biggest challenges as a business? Keeping up with the trends and changes in the sewing machines and the sewing industry. Who knew 20 years ago that the machines of today would require computer skills? What’s your business philosophy? We don’t just sell machines - we provide service and education. What issues are affecting your industry? The economy. What are the factors that make your business successful? We sell a quality product and provide support for that product. Anyone purchasing a machine from us receives one-on-one lessons with that machine. These lessons are available as long as the customer owns the machine and we have had customers come in several years after purchasing a machine for help with a function that they haven’t used before. We also have parts and accessories for machines and vacuum cleaners we sell. How do you handle competition? We strive to provide the best customer support and service possible for our machines. What is your advice to someone thinking about opening a business? One of the best things you can do is work in the type of business you want to own. I worked for the former owner for many years before buying the store from them and I knew what to expect in terms of the slow times and busy times. |
