| Rapid Decent Mon, 26 May 2008 09:41:44 -0500 Every year, Sgt. John Hurley says the same thing - “don’t tell me you can’t do it, change that negative ‘I can’t’ into a positive ‘I’ll try’ ” - when it comes time for Warren Central High School’s Army JROTC cadets to go rappelling. Scaling the side of a tower isn’t the easiest thing to do, but “people can do anything they put their mind to,” he said. The school’s JROTC has the training twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall. And on May 19, 25 students went down the side of the rappel tower. Rappelling is used to build confidence, ultimately helping cadets conquer their fears. “Our classes aren’t like any other,” Hurley said. “About 95 percent of the students have never done anything like this and it instills confidence in their leadership skills and fosters trust.” Members of the JROTC weren’t the only ones to go down the tower that sits adjacent to the practice football field behind the tennis courts. The activity is open to faculty who haven’t rappelled before or those who wanted to do it again. Hurley said to date, 10 faculty members, including principal Lisa Hood and retiring math teacher Jill Price, have participated. He said for the year, 68 participants have rappelled. In addition to being a confidence booster, the activities force participants to pay attention to detail, Hurley said. The student cadets and participants go through a safety briefing and a tower operation briefing, Hurley said. “If something is not done right, they have to go back and do it again before they go down the tower,” he said. “There are certain procedures they have to perform, and if they don’t perform them, they don’t get in the tower.” Before the training to rappel, Hurley said the tower has to pass a safety inspection by Warren County Schools director of maintenance Charles Rector to make sure it is stable and safe. “If you’ve never done this before, it’s an experience of a lifetime, especially if you are scared of heights,” he said. “It’s been emotional for several cadets, male and female ... helping them to overcome fears and pay attention to detail makes them better overall.” |
