| Reasonable Doubt: Negative headlines: Supply and demand Sat, 16 Aug 2008 21:21:23 -0500 Why is it always bad news? Newspapers and TV get bashed a lot for covering bad news: crime, death, blunders and ominous trends. Reporters get accused of chasing bad news with glee, as though we revel in others’ misfortune. It’s true that the front page of the average paper, or the top stories on an evening newscast, are likely to summarize the worst things that happened since the last edition. So why don’t we report good news? Why don’t we lead off with happy stuff, and leave the unfortunate events buried on inside pages? I often hear the resentful comment that we’re only writing about some contentious issue to sell more papers, as though the writers get an extra nickel if people clamor for twice as many copies tomorrow. That’s not the case, I can assure you. In fact, there have been numerous attempts to start “good news papers,” but most have folded quickly. The most successful of those limped along mostly out of determination, not from readers’ demand. Put simply, when things are going well, nobody’s interested. People have enough going on in their own lives that, unless some jarring occurrence intrudes on their days, they’re mostly satisfied with the knowledge that things are running as they ought. And there is a definite interest, whether people like to admit it or not, in hearing the details of other peoples’ screw-ups. Cheerful human interest stories are appreciated, but only so far. Then there’s space. It’s always limited, and that correspondingly limits the daily review to what went wrong. If you don’t hear about it, things probably went OK; there’s no novelty when everything runs as expected. Most news is, by definition, bad. Nevertheless, let’s give it a try. Let’s consider what news might sound like if it accentuated the positive, but still tried to convey basic information about the state of the world. Good evening. Only one of the 25,000 or so homes in Bowling Green burned down yesterday, meaning that all but the Naugahyde family didn’t have to find emergency shelter or wonder how they’ll get to work and school without any spare clothes or personal belongings. All the classmates of Davey Naugahyde, 9, still have rooms and a bed to go back to tonight. Jane Constipation of Tompkinsville never saw the poisonous snake coiled outside her trailer door this morning. It never saw her either, since it was dead. We didn’t ask her about it, because she still doesn’t know it’s there, and probably won’t for another week or so. Turning to state news, an internal investigation found that 97 of the 100 employees at the Kentucky Department of Hosiery Management are honest and hardworking. Those 97 did not engage in clearing the sale of substandard stockings in return for free samples. Nationwide, Dave Oblivious of Cincinnati, Ohio, was among the roughly 304 million Americans not hit by buses yesterday. “What?” he said after his non-experience. Sylvia Spittoon of Pierre, S.D., decided to walk two blocks to the convenience store this morning, rather than driving her SUV, thus saving 5 gallons out of the 20.7 million barrels of oil the United States uses every day. World travelers had a good day, on average; several million airplane passengers arrived safely, despite some slight delays, except for the 237 on board a jetliner that plunged into the Indian Ocean shortly after takeoff from Mumbai, and the seven occupants of three light planes in Wisconsin, France and Namibia. About 90 percent of the world’s 192 countries were technically at peace, though another 10 percent or so fought insurgencies and separatist movements. Among those countries at peace is Switzerland, which hasn’t fought a war in five centuries or so, and as a result has produced - as noted by Orson Welles - the cuckoo clock. In health news, all but 150,000 of the world’s 6.6 billion people did not die yesterday, and nearly half of the living had more than one meal. Now for the weather. Most of the country - most of the world, in fact - will have temperatures well within the range necessary to support human life. “It’s pretty nice,” said Fernando Solo of Irian Jaya. “It’s been nice all week.” Comments were unavailable from the residents of Squalor, Kansas, due to the inconvenient presence of five tornados. Thank you and good night. One final note; I’ve just been handed a late bulletin: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead. |

The person lying under the sheets likely will emerge from the treatment calm and relaxed, still smelling the scented massage lotions, but with virtually no recollection of the music wafting through the room. |

But if their lyrics had been sung over twangy guitar chords or a reverberant surf beat, they'd have sounded like tributes to Rick Nelson or Annette Funicello. |
